 About David...

Dave Whitaker
Dr. David Whitaker
Executive Director
NextGen Churches

Dave grew up in a pastor's home and has served in ministry since '81. After seminary, he returned to pastor in his home church, First Baptist Church of San Ramon, CA. In '91, he moved to Phoenix, AZ  as Sr Pastor of Heart to Heart Bible Church. During his thirteen years of ministry in North Phoenix, he also received a DMin and merged the church with a sister church, becoming Moon Valley Bible Church. Dave's burden to return to the Bay Area lead him in 2004 to become the lead pastor of Morgan Hill Bible Church.

Dave serves as a police chaplain in Morgan Hill and has served on the board of Next Generation Churches of Northern California and Nevada.

Lanette is Dave's wife of 30 years and partner in ministry. Lanette (who grew up in a bi-lingual ministry and pastor-missionary home in Phoenix),  is a gifted speaker and a ministry leader at MHBC.  Dave and Lanette have two great kids: Jon (26--married to Carrie), who is studying interior architecture design and serves on staff at City Church in San Francisco) and Kaylan (20--a college junior) studying graphic design.

Dave loves hanging out with his wife and kids, playing golf, reading, hanging out with friends and playing with his Apple gadgets. Dave and Lanette have a special heart for those who serve in ministry and their families.

Announcing Dr. David Whitaker as new
Director of Next Generation Churches

Dear Next Generation Churches,

As you are well aware, our association has been on a journey over the last two to three years. During these years, we have sought God's wisdom regarding the direction of Next Generation Churches. Throughout our long and storied history, there have been numerous changes that have been reflective of both the needs of our congregations and our desire to remain focused on our mission. The past few years have been no exception. During this transitional time, we have rewritten our Constitution and By-laws, reshaped the role of the board, and begun envisioning for the future. The primary question that has driven this envisioning is "Why Next Generation Churches?" In this current era, denominational loyalty is faltering, churches are plateaued or in decline, and pastors are isolated and alone like never before. As we have prayed, researched, and strategized over these past few years, the board has recognized the difficulties before us. But we are fully convinced that our association is uniquely equipped to encourage, resource, and empower our pastors and churches to fulfill their purpose in their unique communities.

Our Values, Mission, and Vision are reflective of our desire to serve our pastors and churches in a way that furthers Christ's Kingdom.

Our Values

Healthy Churches

Relationally and Strategically Connected Churches

Strategic, Cooperative Church-Planting

Effective Leadership Development

 Our Mission

To empower churches and their leaders to discover and achieve their God-given mission.

 Our Vision

A network of missional churches transforming lives with the grace and truth of Jesus.

During this time of transition, we have been especially blessed by the leadership of Dr. Brad Franklin. His loyalty and passion for Next Gen have set the stage for the renewal that we are currently experiencing. From the beginning, Brad's role was to guide us through this transition, safeguard our values, and lead the strategy for what is to come. As a board, words could not express our gratitude for his selfless and sacrificial leadership.  But the time for transition has ended.

In August of this year, Brad notified us of his intention to leave his role as transitional director of Next Gen by the end of October (see Brad's letter below). Immediately we began the process of praying about who God would have lead us to fulfill our Values, Mission, and Vision.  We believe that God has clearly answered our prayers in the selection of Dr. David Whitaker, Lead Pastor of Morgan Hill Bible Church, as our new Executive Director. During the process of selecting Dave, we made a strategic decision that we want to share with you. We have decided that the best model for our association is to have a full-time pastor as our Executive Director. Here is why:

  • We believe that a full-time pastor is uniquely situated to have both credibility and influence among the pastors of our association.
  •  We believe that the era of the "one-man show" is no longer the best stewardship of our resources or the healthiest approach to ministry.
  •  We believe that the decentralization of Next Gen and a focus on grass roots leadership is the direction that our association should pursue.

So it is with great support and anticipation that we announce Dr. David Whitaker as the new Executive Director of Next Generation Churches. Please join us in prayerfully supporting and encouraging him in this new role. As always, if you have additional questions or concerns please feel free to contact any of us.

Sincerely,

The Board of Next Generation Churches

A note from Brad Franklin
2010 Pastors Retreat

Dear Friends and Colleagues:

I want you to know what a great privilege it has been to serve you in the role of Transitional Executive Director over the last two years. While we have not been able to accomplish everything on our agenda yet, we have made good progress. Here are some of the things in which we have made progress:

  • Implemented the Strategic Cluster with good results
  •  Implemented Regional Cluster Strategy with great potential
  •  Launched the Empower Events which will have huge impact for our churches
  •  Upgraded the Pastors and Staff Retreat and the Annual Celebration Event
  •  Closed two very sick churches while providing funding for more new churches and ongoing operations
  •  Changed leadership at Silver Spur that will create positive traction in the years to come

I also want you to know how excited I am about handing the reigns of NextGen over to Dave Whitaker. Dave has served faithfully as our board president for the past couple years. He and I have worked closely on the needs and opportunities of the association. He is a godly man, a great husband and father, a gifted leader. He loves our association, and I believe the Lord has gifted him to lead us into the future. I hope you will give him the same grace you gave me in this role. Dave will do a great job for us!

For me, my attention will return full-time to serving Lakeside Church. I have some challenges here that need my undivided attention. However, I am looking forward to giving Dave and NextGen Churches my undiluted support. We are hoping to launch another round of the Strategic Cluster this year, and I hope to be leading that cluster again. I long to see NextGen become a dynamic tool for reaching and serving our region of Nevada and northern California.

Thank you for putting your trust in me when you gave me this role. You have honored me all along the way. I am grateful to each one of you. I love you all deeply.

I am especially grateful to Rick Watson and Jim Culp who have served in part-time roles with me for the association. Most of what we have accomplished can be attributed directly to their great work. I am grateful to the board as well. What a great group of men who are leading us forward.

I look forward to seeing you all at our upcoming Empower Events and the annual celebrations at Mount Hermon.

God bless you.

Grace,
