More 100th Anniversary Highlights
GSEP 100th Anniversary celebrations have been taking place throughout the year and May was a very busy month! GSEP, in collaboration with the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society, and the two other Girl Scout Councils in PA joined forces to plant 10,000 trees. That goal has been surpassed - 13,150 trees have been planted statewide since May 18, 2012!
Every registered troop in the state had the opportunity to receive a sapling (either an Eastern White Pine or Eastern Hemlock) to plant in honor of Girl Scouts 100th Anniversary. Trees planted throughout GSEP not only honor this momentous milestone in Girl Scout history, but also help contribute towards the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society's goal of planting 1,000,000 trees by 2020.
On May 8th volunteers gathered at Shelly Ridge to prepare many of the trees which were then taken by our sponsor, UPS, and transported to service centers for troop pick up.
Also in May, the Olave-Baden Powell Society (OB-PS), which supports the mission of the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS) to enable girls to develop their fullest potential as responsible citizens of the world, returned to the United States for the first time in 15 years for their annual event. From May 17- 20 more than 230 members of the OB-PS, representing 21 different countries, joined GSUSA and GSEP in celebration of the Centennial of Girl Scouting in the USA.
The goal of the event was to provide the society's international visitors with opportunities to meet with city leaders, see Girl Scouts in action at the local headquarters -- the Shelly Ridge facility of Girl Scouts of Eastern Pennsylvania - and to experience the rich history and culture of Philadelphia firsthand.
Highlights of the event included:
A welcome reception held at the National Constitution Center on May 17, during which Mayor Michael Nutter presented OB- PS's patron, HRH Princess Benedikte of Denmark, with the Philadelphia Bowl, the City's highest honor given for contributions to the City.
OB- PS's patron, HRH Princess Benedikte of Denmark and GSUSA CEO, Anna Maria Chávez joined girls at Shelly Ridge on May 19 while spending the day outdoors participating in workshops and creating lasting works of art while celebrating the 100th Anniversary of Girl Scouting with members of the Olave Baden-Powell Society.
