Getting a Jump-Start on Cookies from Home
With the annual Army-Navy football weekend in Philadelphia as a back-drop, Girl Scouts of Eastern Pennsylvania (GSEP) kicked off its Cookies from Home program to support shipments of Girl Scout Cookies to U.S. military serving overseas. The effort collected approximately $2,000 in monetary contributions.

GSEP worked in partnership with the Philadelphia Convention & Visitors Bureau and
Operation Gratitude, and stationed Girl Scouts at three Army-Navy events on December 11 and 12 to promote the Council-wide initiative and collect donations from hundreds of captive and supportive football fans. Uniformed girls staffed an information table at a Friday afternoon Pep Rally in the Shops at Liberty Place and a collection station at the Army-Navy Gala that evening. On sunny but chilly Saturday, Girl Scouts and other volunteers were in position at the Comcast Gate outside Lincoln Financial Field from 8am-2:30pm, where they collected contributions from football fans entering the stadium. A KYW3 camera-crew interviewed the collection team at the Friday-night gala, and KYW1060 Newsradio conducted a series of live and taped game-day interviews with Barbara Bankert, GSEP's Director of Product Program.

The Army-Navy Cookies from Home kick-off gives GSEP a significant head-start on its 2010 goal of selling 5,000 cases--or 60,000 boxes--of Girl Scout Cookies for shipment overseas. A portion of the weekend's proceeds will be used to help send daughters of active military personnel to Girl Scout Camp next summer. During the annual Cookie Program, Girl Scouts typically accrue and apply proceeds from their sales to a range of individual or troop-based incentives. To coincide with its 2010 Cookie Program kick-off on January 14,
GSEP will ship 55 cases, or 660 boxes--to Operation Gratitude's packaging facility in Van Nuys, California in early January. The West Coast nonprofit, which recently shipped its 500,000th care package to overseas military, will process the cookie shipment. GSEP's 2010 Cookie Program runs through March 7.

(Below) Six-year old Caeleen Demusz from Girl Scout Daisy Troop 993 (Philadelphia County) wasn't shy about requesting contributions from eager football fans, and (l. to r.) Girl Scout Brownie Mariah Nagle (Troop 8709, Northampton County), Caeleen Demusz, and Girl Scout Brownie Julianne Rosko from Moravian Academy (Northampton) took a quick break in the booth.

GSEP Girls and Staff Spread Holiday Cheer
After completing a successful food drive, girls from the Spring Corners Service Unit (Berks County) went caroling, and warmed up with a large-group rendition of "We Wish You a Merry Christmas." GSEP Membership Manager Betty Villarreal was invited by WWSI-TV 62, a Telemundo affiliate, to extend a holiday message for Hispanic and Latino audiences in Philadelphia, Wilmington and Atlantic City.

Lansdale-area Girl Scout Daisies (Troop 7956), Brownies (Troop 7865) and Juniors (Troop 71525) from the North Penn Valley Service Unit (Montgomery County) were awarded Third Place in the annual Pearl S. Buck Festival of Trees event, which invites local organizations to brighten the historic homestead of the famed novelist. In keeping with this year's "Holiday Magic" theme, the girls made four wreaths, a tree skirt, a tree-topper and their own individual ornaments to adorn the homestead's Awards Room. All of the girls' decorations reflected the ways in which they find and make "magic" through Girl Scouting.

The curator of the Pearl Buck House museum in Perkasie specifically invited the Girl Scouts to participate among a field of 23 professional decorators, retailers and manufacturers, making their third-place showing particularly noteworthy. Here, Girl Scout Daisy Linsey Gilbert (Troop 7956) adds her ornament to the tree, and a wreath display captures what the girls love about Girl Scouting.
