October 2009: A Month of Milestones
Three weeks after First Lady Michelle Obama accepted the White House-tradition to serve as the honorary National President of Girl Scouts, President Barack Obama signed the Girl Scouts of the USA Commemorative Coin Act, which authorizes the U.S. Mint to produce 350,000 silver coins for sale in 2013 to mark the end of GSUSA's year-long centennial celebration. Ten dollars from the sale of each coin will help fund much-needed renovations at Juliette Gordon Low's birthplace in Savannah, Georgia.

Two days after the President signed the bill, dozens of Girl Scouts from our Council marked the 149th anniversary of Juliette Gordon Low's birthday with creative, girl-led events. In Berks County, 40 Girl Scout Cadettes and Seniors attended a breast cancer awareness program, to aptly conclude National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and note that Juliette Low herself died of the disease. In nearby Fleetwood, 50 younger Girl Scouts gathered in costume at a Halloween Birthday Party, where Junior Troop 11096 planned numerous activities including marshmallow archery and 'Pin the Hat on Juliette Low.' In Oreland (Montgomery County), Girl Scout Daisies tasted-off to choose the winner of an Iron Chef-style Birthday Cake Bake-off, cooked up by 10 Girl Scout Seniors and Ambassadors.

Hundreds of other Girl Scouts celebrated earlier with an ice cream-and-cake party for 100 Daisy through Senior level girls in Reading (Berks); a Juliette Low Campfire by Solehi SU (Lehigh); a party and scarecrow contest for 240 girls from Penn's Ridge SU (Upper Bucks); and an annual Halloween dance event that raised money for GSEP and drew 120 girls from Neshaminy SU (Lower Bucks).  Watch for more photos of the celebrations.

And last summer, Girl Scout Ambassador Troop 53131 (Delaware County) made a pilgrimage to Juliette Low's birthplace. Many of the girls met as Daisies, and one noted that "we've learned so much about [Juliette Low], but it becomes 'more real' when you see her home ... [and more] significant that this one woman had the power and drive to accomplish what we now call Girl Scouts."

The Volunteer Background Clearance Process is now available online at the Adult Education page, with links to all Application, Renewal and Volunteer Clearance Reference Forms, and an FAQ document. Fees for the online Process are payable with a credit card. Application and Renewal Forms can still be mailed, with a $5 check or money order made payable to GSEP.

Volunteer Background Clearance Applications and Renewals are valid for three years. GSEP also honors prior Background Clearances, completed by other organizations within the last 12 months, for three years.

With a commitment to providing a safe environment for its girl members, the GSEP Board of Directors Volunteer Policies state that "consent for a criminal background clearance is required for adult volunteers who work directly with girls on a regular basis. This includes leaders, co-leaders, product program managers, and adults who attend overnight events." Applicants' sensitive information is processed in a strictly confidential manner, with in-process applications maintained in locked files. Sensitive information is removed and destroyed upon process completion. Applicants and their corresponding Service Units will be notified by mail about the screening outcome within 2-3 weeks of application.
