Sunoco Welcome America Philadelphia 4th of July Parade
Attention Troop Leaders! You are cordially invited to march in the Sunoco Welcome America Philadelphia July 4th Parade on July 4, 2009 at 11:00am in Philadelphia's wonderful historic district! GSEP has already been accepted for participation, and we hope to have a large number of Girl Scouts representing our Council. The parade route is about one mile long, and will proceed in front of Independence Hall, the Liberty Bell, and the National Constitution Center. The parade assembly area is in locations close to the parade start, in amongst shade trees, making for a pleasant assembly process. If your troop wishes to participate, please mail this application to the address on the form. In addition, please email Debbie Jacobson at djacobson@gsep.org so that we know you will be participating. GSEP is Committed to Customer Service On March 31st at the Lehigh Valley Service Center and on April 7th at the Shelly Ridge Service Center, GSEP hosted two customer service focus group meetings. These meetings were conducted with a small group of volunteers and were designed for GSEP Staff to ask customer service related questions and to allow the volunteers to provide candid and constructive feedback as well as suggestions for areas of improvement. The content of these focus group meetings has been used to design internal customer service seminars which will be attended by our staff. These are just a few of the many steps we are taking as we continue to improve the level of customer service that we provide to our volunteers. Going forward, we will continue to host focus group meetings as well as continue our in-house trainings. If you have a customer service concern or an unresolved issue, please contact Mary Novak at 610.791.2411, ext.1530, or by email at mnovak@gsep.org. Guiding Mosaic 2010Do you like to camping and the outdoors? Do you love to travel? Then join the Girl Guides of Canada as they celebrate their 100th Anniversary July 8-17, 2010. Held in the Guelph Lake Conservation Area in Southern Ontario, this event is a 10 day camping adventure with Girl Scouts and Girl Guides from around the world. Girls can choose from a wide variety of activities: sports, adventure activities, special events, community service projects with an environmental focus, international guests and more. Cost is $400/person (Canadian dollars) not including transportation to Canada. All participants need a current passport. For event details click here. If you or your troop is interested in this exciting opportunity, please contact Joan Hannahoe at jhannahoe@gsep.org or 610.791.2411, ext.1509. The registration period is currently open and will close March 31, 2010. If we get enough girls interested, we can charter a bus to Ontario. |
| GSEP In the News
Girl Scout Gold Awards took front and center in the news media in the last two weeks with coverage in print, broadcast and online media. More stories are scheduled.
WEEU-AM, which reaches Reading and Allentown, ran an interview with Noreen Shanfelter, GSEP, about the Gold Awards and liked the story so much that it requested an interview with one of the Scouts, Marjorie Berman, who earned her Gold Award for collecting books, transporting them to an orphanage in Guatemala and building a library there. Marjorie was struck by Guatemala's literacy rate, which is among the lowest in the world. Her project took off from there. Three different "actualities" (edited versions of Marjorie's story) ran in three different newscasts yesterday and will run in one today (May 19). The story will also be posted this week on the station's web site.
And coverage of our Lehigh Valley Take The Lead event continues:
- The Eastern Pennsylvania Business Journal ran a story and six color photos showing five of our honorees, and one of Girl Scout Kaily Swenson selling cookies following the dinner.
- The Morning Call covered Take The Lead and ran two photos in its Society column.

Camp Hidden Falls and Camp Tohikanee After much consideration we have determined that, due to low enrollment, the three week sessions of Camp Hidden Falls resident camp and Camp Tohikanee day camp will not run this summer. This was a very difficult decision to make, but in these uncertain times we must remain fiscally responsible. As you know, Girl Scout camp is one of the best values around. Enrollment is currently up from last year and although a number of sessions are now full, there is still room in the other resident and day camps. Also, the weekend programs will still be running at Camp Tohikanee. The "Just Us Girls" programs are filling up, but there is still room in "Me and My Guy", "Tohi Traditions" and "Family Camp".
