Iowa Senate passes GDL legislation
On March 9, the Iowa Senate passed Senate File 184, legislation that would strengthen the state's Graduated Driver Licensing laws. The bill would extend the learner permit stage from a minimum of six months to a minimum of twelve months and would require teen drivers to be accident- and violation-free for 12 months before qualifying for an intermediate license.
The legislation would also establish a passenger restriction prohibiting teens in the intermediate stage from having more than one other non-family minor in the car for the first six months of an intermediate license. Iowa currently does not have any passenger restriction for novice teen drivers.
The bill now goes to the Iowa House of Representatives.

Members of Congress want to hear from YOU
The most powerful and persuasive way to educate lawmakers about the STANDUP Act is through personal stories, particularly stories from parents who have lost a child in a teen driving related crash and people who have survived a teen driving crash.
If you or someone you know has a story about a teen driving crash that you would be willing to share, please contact Jenny Cheek at the Saferoads4teens Coalition by clicking here or calling 202-408-1711. |
