Recent Teen Driver Crashes Across the Nation (click to read more about each crash)

Editor's Note:  This week seemed to be especially deadly for teen drivers.  However, as with every week, these are just a few of the many teen crashes that occur.  It's estimated that already in 2010, more than 1600 people have been killed in crashes involving teen drivers.

STANDUP ACT UPDATE
April 2, 2010

"Spring" Into Action on the STANDUP Act

Members of Congress are back in their districts for the Spring District Work Period until April 9.  It's the perfect time for them to hear from their constituents (you!) about the Safe Teen And Novice Driver Uniform Protection Act, H.R. 1895.

Contact information for members' district offices can be found on their official websites.  Click here for a link to websites for all members of the House of Representatives.

Call your Representative's district office to ask him or her to co-sponsor the STANDUP Act, H.R. 1895.  Better yet, set up a meeting with your Representative while he or she is in the district office.  An in-person meeting is a great opportunity to urge your Representative to co-sponsor the STANDUP Act and to explain why safe teen driving is important to you.

National Safety Council releases new information on distracted driving

Distracted driving, specifically cell phone use while driving, has received significant attention lately. While many people understand the increased crash risks caused by drivers texting while driving, the lack of understanding about the dangers of hands-free phones remains a challenge. Driving while using a cell phone requires the brain to multitask - a process it is incapable of doing safely while driving. To explain the limitations of the human brain as it pertains to multitasking, the National Safety Council has developed a white paper.

The paper includes information on the limitations of the brain, how multitasking impairs driving performance, the inability of the brain to capture driving cues when a person is multitasking and why people do not realize they are, in fact, distracted when using a cell phone while driving.
Click here to read the paper and other resources on the National Safety Council website.

The Safe Teen And Novice Driver Uniform Protection (STANDUP) Act is federal legislation that would compel states to strengthen their laws for novice teen drivers, often called Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) laws.
