Distracted Driving Legislation Advances in Iowa
 
The Iowa House and Senate have reached a compromise on distracted driving legislation.  If enacted, the bill will ban drivers younger than 18 from using a cell phone while driving, as well as ban all drivers from texting behind the wheel.  Iowa House Speaker Pat Murphy says he expects the compromise bill to pass quickly.

The STANDUP Act adds more co-sponsors

H.R. 1895, the Safe Teen And Novice Driver Uniform Protection (STANDUP) Act, has gained two more co-sponsors:

Rep. Albio Sires (NJ-13)
Rep. John Hall (NY-19)

New Study of Graduated Driver Licensing Confirms the Safety Benefits of Delaying the Licensing Age
 
A study published in the February 22 issue of the journal Traffic Injury Prevention evaluates the Graduated Driver Licensing laws in New Jersey and confirms the lifesaving benefit of delaying licensing age for teen drivers.  The results of the study include the following:
  • Delaying the licensing age to 17 eliminates most crashes by 16 year old drivers.
  • There is no corresponding increase in fatal crashes among novice 17-year-old drivers.

 
In the News:  Toughest States on Distracted Driving
 
A report was published this week in Forbes about the states that are toughest on distracted driving.  The report looked at distracted-driving law and penalty information from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Governors Highway Safety Administration, Handsfreeinfo.com, the Center for Auto Safety and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.
