STANDUP ACT UPDATE
February 5, 2010
Did You Know?

Some reminders of why we are fighting for passage of the STANDUP Act  ...

  • Motor vehicle crashes are the #1 killer of teens in the United States.

  • Motor vehicle crashes kill more teens ages 15-19 than homicide, suicide, cancer, heart disease, and influenza combined.*

  • Teen driver crashes kill more than 17 people every day.  That's the equivalent of a jetliner crashing every week.**

  • The presence of teen passengers increases the crash risk of unsupervised teen drivers; that crash risk increases as the number of teen passengers increases.

  • Strong Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) laws have been proven to reduce teen driver crashes by up to 40%.

  • GDL laws vary widely in strength and effectiveness from state to state, leaving deadly gaps in protection for thousands of teen drivers.

Thank you for supporting the STANDUP Act and the Saferoads4teens Coalition!

The Safe Teen And Novice Driver Uniform Protection (STANDUP) Act is federal legislation that would compel states to strengthen their laws for novice teen drivers, often called Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) laws.
