Research Shows Rural Parents Support Strong Graduated Driver Licensing
An article this week in the Des Moines Register reports that Iowa parents, both urban and rural, support the kind of strong Graduated Driver Licensing provisions that are included in the STANDUP Act.
A telephone poll of 1,065 Iowa parents - designed by the University of Iowa Human Factors & Vehicle Safety Research Division and the University of North Carolina Center for the Study of Young Drivers - produced results supporting proposed enhancements to teen driving laws in that state:
97% of parents favor a prohibition on teens texting while driving
90% of parents favor a ban on teens talking on a cell phone while driving
82% of parents favor a prohibition on nighttime driving, beginning at 10 p.m.
79% of parents favor limiting new drivers to no more than one unrelated teen passenger
56% of parents favor 12 months of supervised driving for teens
According to the researchers who conducted the poll, fewer Iowans would die in car crashes if legislators would enact these restrictions.
