2010 Roadmap to State Highway Safety Laws Report and Press Event
Advocates for Highway and Auto Safety has released the 2010 Roadmap to State Highway Safety Laws. (click here for the full report) This report highlights gaps in Advocates' list of 15 essential and lifesaving highway safety laws and is a call to action for Governors and state legislators. Seven of the 15 laws rated are provisions of the STANDUP Act. In 2008, motor vehicle crashes caused over 37,000 deaths and over 2.3 million injuries and cost the nation over $230 billion. Passage of the 15 laws identified in the report will help prevent these tragedies.
A press conference was held on Monday, January 11 to introduce the new roadmap and call for passage of highway safety laws across the nation. The STANDUP Act was emphasized as a crucial means to improve state teen driver safety laws by many of the speakers, including Susan Vavala, a Delaware mother whose daughter, Kim, was killed in a crash with a teen driver; Rep. Chris Van Hollen (D-MD), co-sponsor of the STANDUP Act; Illinois State Senate President John Cullerton; Dr. Joseph Wright, representing the American Academy of Pediatrics; and Bill Martin, co-chair of Advocates for Highway and Auto Safety and Senior Vice-President for Farmers Insurance.
