Old is New and Now
Nothing adds intrigue, homespun charm, seasoned character or pedigree to interiors as does a perfectly placed one-of-a kind antique. Decorating with antiques is important as they imbue a space with a sense of history and connection to the past. Our world and lives are constantly moving forward and changing. Our spaces challenge the direction in which we are moving as well as reflect how far we have come.
In decades past, owning antiques seemed limited to the deep pocketed set for whom price didn't matter so long as the quality of the items were good. Changes in pricing are making antiques more affordable. In fact, according to antiques dealer, appraiser and authenticator David Linquist of Whitehall Antiques, there's been an "astonishing " decline in the price of antiques. We are seeing prices comparable to the 1980s. As the prices are dropping, a younger client is buying antiques. An increasing appreciation of the quality of antiques is growing. An antique has shown its value and merit for 100 years. Each item is unique and has the effect of a one of a kind sculpture. Every home should have one or two "sculptures". Modern spaces can come off as cold without the juxtaposition of interesting accent pieces that create an element of surprise and personality. Some of the most sought after items are:
- Dining and occasional tables of various sizes and styles, including Georgian and Americana. It's not just mid-century that's popular. A great table besides a large piece of upholstery really shows the warmth of the antique.
- Antique light fixtures that have been rewired for present day use. English floor lamps in all different colors, Victorian brass chandeliers with etched glass shades, Russian samovars, and painted French pieces are accenting all different styles.
- Salvaged architectural elements repurposed into one-of-a-kind objects. From large objects like columns and fireplace mantels to smaller pieces like finials, globes, and fragments of building facades.
