| Seeds Have Traveled Far |
Last fall, Parkway Partners received a generous donation of seeds from Ed Hume, Baker Creek and Heirloom Seeds; delivery of the one ton of seeds was donated by FedEx. A year and a half later, we are looking at all of the many groups and individuals who were the recipients of the "great New Orleans seed giveaway." The seeds have now found themselves in 31 Parkway Partners community gardens, at Hollygrove Farm, at projects through Jericho Road, ARC, Catholic Charities, Baptist Community Ministries, New Orleans Food and Farm Network, Master Gardeners of Greater New Orleans, at Common Ground's Healthy Soil Project and Kingsley House, to name a few. Seeds that could not tolerant our hot climate were sent on their way. Master gardener and friend of Parkway Partners, Debra Surtain met a group of Mennonites down in New Orleans helping to rebuild after Katrina. She forged a great friendship with them, and when they left, they took her with them for a time. Since then she has been sending them our seeds.

Flo Schornstein to be Honored |
The 16-year director of Parks and Parkways and founder of Parkway Partners Flo Schornstein will be honored at Feast with the Stars 2010.
"My greatest pride was creating Parkway Partners as a response to budgetary cuts in 1982. This involved the community in the maintenance and conservation of the city's green spaces and our neutral ground adoption program, which became a model copied across the nation," said Schornstein. Other innovative programs followed, including the Community Gardens program that transforms blighted lots into public green spaces, which was once the largest of its type in the country. Post-Katrina, the ReLeaf New Orleans initiative has resulted in the planting of 7,800 trees to date.
Schornstein is the recipient of many honors and awards including, the President's Volunteer Action Award presented by George W. Bush. She is an avid volunteer, serving on many boards, including the National Council of Jewish Women, the Urban League, the United Way, and the Sewerage and Water Board. She is also founder of the Child Care Rebuild Collaborative.
