| Neutral Ground Partnership |
 |
|
Community organizations, businesses and
private citizens may "adopt" a park,
playground, or neutral ground in their
neighborhood. "Adoption" requires a one year
commitment of picking up litter, and may also
include cutting grass, planting, weeding, and
watering plants materials or other
maintenance services, as agreed upon by the
sponsor and the Department of Parks and
Parkways. Each adoption is recognized by the
placement of a sign.

Planting Orchards - A New Orleans first |
|
|
|
ReLeaf Program Director Jo Ann Albrecht
transports the first load of fruit trees for
planting orchards in the Lower 9th
Ward.
The Fruit Tree Planting Foundation,
Department of Parks and Parkways and Loyola
Alum teamed up with Parkway Partners to
introduce the first community orchards at
five sites around the city. The orchards
are a new concept for the city. Planting
highly productive fruit trees on vacant lots
is a lower maintenance project than community
gardens that sport herbaceous plants, yet
they will aptly support their neighborhoods'
food production.
Three of the orchards are located in the
Lower 9th Ward, one in St. Roch and one in
Gentilly. A total of 87 fig, persimmon and
citrus trees were planted and there is
interest to plant more tropical plants such
as papaya and mango when the weather warms.
For more on the orchards, read this great
article printed in the Times Picayune.
