  • Preparing the Vegetable Garden
    veggies

2nd Saturday, September 12 is centered on prepping a fall vegetable garden. Open 9:00 a.m. - 12 noon vegetable sets and tropical plants will be for sale as well as soil amendments.

At 10:00 a.m. Community Gardener Philip Soulet will step into a community garden to demonstrate soil preparation and seeding. It starts at our greenhouse at the corner of Clio and Baronne.

It is time to prepare the soil, fertilize, and seed. Carefully weed, turn in that wonderful compost you've cultivated, let it rest for a week or two, plant your greenhouse sets or seeds and you will be eating fresh and healthy foods in New Orleans' ideal growing season.

To participate in a Parkway Partners Community Garden, call Macon Fry for more information at 504-620- 2224.

    Neutral Ground Partner Highlight
    zulu

Zulu President Charles Hamilton poses with his neutral ground adoption sign before it is placed at the Broad Street location. The biggest neutral ground challenge facing the club was to block the parking of cars so that trees could grow -- now it is an attractive area again. Charles Hamilton was a part of the ReLeaf New Orleans planning team in 2006 as Parkway Partners launched its city-wide tree planting initiative.

    Farewell Maris
    maris

Maris Jones was a familiar face at 2nd Saturday Programs, but she has now left us for Italy as she participates in a special scholarship program.

Before Maris flew out of New Orleans she was featured with WWL's Sally Ann Roberts as a "Quiet Hero" on August 25. Maris led a tree planting effort in New Orleans East as part of her Girl Scout Gold Award project.

Celebrate the Launch of Tree Planting Season
    at Feast with the Stars!
    toast

Celebrate 6,000 large, healthy trees that were re-introduced into neighborhoods throughout New Orleans by Parkway Partners at "Feast With the Stars" on October 11 at Gallier Hall. And get your shovels ready -- the event marks the launch of the 2009-2010 planting season that ends in March. It is time to earnestly begin planting again.

Trees do more for the city than creating a lush beautiful setting. Trees clean the air, reduce temperatures, cut stormwater run-off, reduce our utility bills and reverse the "heat island" created by so much concrete.
