Esplanade Ridge tree planting took place on
North Miro with residents from the
neighborhood. Parkway Partners provided the
trees through the ReLeaf New Orleans
initiative. Treme, Milneburg, Marigny,
Lakeview, the Lower 9th Ward and other
neighborhoods are actively planting their
streets with over 500 Parkway Partners trees
approved by the Department of Parks and
Parkways. With over 5,000 trees planted
through ReLeaf New Orleans, the restoration
of our tree canopy is one aspect of our
recovery that will take time to fully appreciate,
but create a better life for all of us in New
Orleans.

Paris Avenue Planting |
|
|
|
Council Member Cynthia Hedge-Morrell
addresses the audience at the Paris Avenue
Tree Planting on January 28. 47 trees were
planted on the barren stretch between Robert
E. Lee Boulevard and Filmore Avenue,
restoring a portion of the lost tree canopy to
this Gentilly neighborhood.
The aftermath of Hurricane Katrina killed all
the southern magnolia trees, and the
Department of Parks and Parkways targeted
this section of neutral ground for tree
replacement because of the rebuilding and
renewal taking place in this area. The
ceremony was the official City of New Orleans
Arbor Day celebration for 2009.
2009 also marks the 100th year of existence
of the Department of Parks and Parkways
which was formed in 1909 and which grew out
of efforts of citizens to organize to plant trees
along the city's avenues, boulevards and
streets.
Students from Holy Cross participated in the
event, excited that the neutral ground fronting
their school is now re-planted. Screen Gems
helped to support this ReLeaf New Orleans
effort with a special grant for the time they
spent filming in New Orleans for the movie,
Max's Mardi Gras.
This planting precedes additional tree
plantings along streets in the surrounding
neighborhood. Parkway Partners has a
program to provide free trees to groups of
neighbors who band together to replant 10 or
more trees along the streets adjacent to their
residences.
