Green Greetings
For more than 25 years, Parkway Partners, the City of
New Orleans Department of Parks and Parkways and
citizens from neighborhoods throughout the metro
area have worked together to improve the quality of life
through our green spaces.
| Time to Plant Trees in Your Neighborhood |
 |
|
We can ReLeaf your neighborhood streets with
free street trees and the approval of the Department of
Parks and Parkways. Our 10 for the Hood Program is
designed to help neighborhoods to recover their tree-
lined streets. Executive Director Jean Fahr would be
pleased to speak to your neighborhood group about
the program. It's easy, just complete the Agreement Form requesting
at least 10 street trees, choose the
species you would like, list the address and get
signature of each participating homeowner and mail
or fax to our office. Above photo is from the
neighborhood tree planting in Treme in January.
Check out the tree planting guide, "Choosing an Appropriate Tree"
on our web site ReLeaf New Orleans page.

Honor the hard-to-buy-for this holiday season with a
living legacy: give the "Gift of ReLeaf." ReLeaf New
Orleans is Parkway Partners' citywide post-Katrina
tree replacement campaign, whose goal is to restore
New Orleans' urban forest, which lost tens of
thousands of public trees in 2005.
Through Gift of ReLeaf, individuals may purchase
trees in honor of loved ones for installation on public
land by Parkway Partners volunteers. You may honor
one person with a tree for street-to-sidewalk
placement in a New Orleans neighborhood, or you
may honor up to ten people with the purchase of a
larger crepe myrtle, magnolia or live oak tree for
installation in a park or on a neutral ground. Parkway
Partners will send personalized holiday cards in your
name to each honoree. Details can be found on our
web site. Use the quick link below.
Gift of ReLeaf orders will be taken until December
12th, if Parkway Partners sends the cards, or until
December 18th if you elect to pick up and mail the
cards yourself. To give the Gift of ReLeaf, call Deb
Graham at 504-620-2227 or email at
dgraham@parkwaypartnersnola.org.
Trees in cities are beautiful and inspiring, and they
perform essential ecological functions that safeguard
residents' health, save public dollars, and contribute
to the vitality of the community. Restoring New
Orleans' urban forest is essential to the city's recovery
from Katrina. Participation in Gift of ReLeaf is an easy
and rewarding way to participate in this important
effort.

We are the Best! Parkway Partners Proudly Achieves LANO Seal of Excellence. |
|
|
|
At the Louisiana Association of Nonprofit
Organizations' (LANO) Annual Conference held in
Baton Rouge last week, Parkway Partners' Executive
Director Jean Fahr received the commendation
designating Parkway Partners as an "Excellent"
organization.
Only two other New Orleans non-profits have achieved
the Seal of Excellence, and Parkway Partners is the
first environmental organization in the state to have
earned the designation. More than a thousand
members strong, LANO is a statewide network of
nonprofits, foundations, corporations and individuals
whose mission is to strengthen, promote and build
the capacity of Louisiana's nonprofit sector through
education, advocacy and member services.
Under the leadership of Parkway Partners' Board
member Susan Couvillon, Parkway Partners began
its quest for standards certification eleven months
ago, when the Board of Directors undertook long-
range program and fund development planning to
support Parkway Partners' post-Katrina priorities.
Staff began assembling documentation to make its
case for organizational excellence to LANO's peer-
reviewers.
The Louisiana Standards for Excellence mirror
national standards and are based on fundamental
values - honesty, integrity, fairness, respect, trust,
responsibility and accountability. Taken together, the
standards describe how nonprofits should act to be
ethical and accountable in their operations,
governance, human resources, financial
management and fundraising. To achieve the Seal
of Excellence, nonprofits undergo a rigorous
examination of their internal practices in eight areas
(Mission & Program, Governing Body & Management,
Conflict of Interest, Human Resources, Financial &
Legal Compliance, Openness and Public Disclosure,
Fundraising, and Public Affairs & Public Policy) for
compliance with 57 Standards that emphasize the
best practices in nonprofit management.
Measurement against the standards helps
determine how well an organization is fulfilling its
obligations to beneficiaries, contributors and the
public.
