2nd Saturday, September 13 is centered around prepping a fall vegetable garden. Fall blooming azaleas will also be featured. Open 9:00 a.m. - 12 noon

At 11:00 a.m. Macon Fry the "Garden Guy" and Jimmy Delery will step into a community garden to demonstrate soil preparation and seeding.

    Time to Sow

It is time to prepare the soil, fertilize, and seed. Carefully weed, turn in that wonderful compost you've cultivated, let it rest for a week or two, plant your greenhouse sets or seeds and you will be eating fresh and healthy foods in New Orleans' ideal growing season.

Start seeds indoor now for broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage to yield a crop in 70 days. By late September, consider directly seeding the following into the soil: Swiss chard, turnips, beets, carrots, kale, radishes, mustard and bush snap beans. In October add spinach and lettuce seeds.

"You can put in plants all winter long," according to Macon Fry, the Parkway Partners Horticulturist. Macon will give advice with local urban farmer Jimmy Delery at the 2nd Saturday program on September 13. Call Parkway Partners for advice or stop by our office for vegetable seeds.

Homegrown veggies have higher nutrient value because they are fresher and because you harvest at their peak. It's a great time to start a backyard garden or participate in a Parkway Partners Community Garden.
