Storm Ready Your Trees |
|
|
|
Are your trees ready for storms? Our trees should
each receive a visual inspection every year and the
storm season offers a greater incentive to do it now.
Newly planted trees as well as mature trees should
be looked over for their general condition and growth
patterns. Healthy trees protect our property in
windstorms by shearing off the winds so we want to
give them all the help they can get.
- Remove dead wood and damaged limbs to make
the tree more wind resistant.
- Inspect the trunk for signs of decay: Cracks in the
trunks or major limbs; hollows; mushrooms at the
base of the tree; large dead branches; carpenter
ants.
- Remove badly located branches: Branches that
hang over the house, near the roof; or those with
close proximity to power lines.
- Consider thinning: Reducing a thick canopy (hard
to see through) allows wind movement by removing
some interior branches. Up 25-30% of foliage can be
removed.
- Check the root plate: Mounding near the base of
the with recent root exposure or recently leaning is a
dangerous sign. Seek a professional.
Consult an arborist as soon as possible if you are
concerned about the health of the tree. You can
find a list of the arborists recommended by the city of
New Orleans on our web site on the Releaf New
Orleans page.
Ask Tom. You send the questions to us, we will
forward your questions to Urban Forester Tom
Campbell.
