| Schoolyard Gardens End of Year |
 |
|
As the school year ends students in PP Sow and
Grow Gardens are harvesting crops and tasting the
bounty from their schoolyard gardens.
Students in grades K-12 spent time in
outdoor classrooms engaged in horticultural
experiences that enhanced the science and math
curriculum. Additionally the beautiful gardens
provided a safe and inviting place for students to
gather and explore the art of nature, horticultural
principles, and healthy eating habits. Students
gained an enhanced sense of ownership and pride in
their campus and surrounding community.
The successful Sow and Grow Program doubled in
size during the current school year. Students at
Benjamin Franklin High School, Macdonogh 15, and
Lusher are joined by students working in new sites at
Edward Hynes, The International School of Louisiana
and Lafayette Academy.
Parkway Partners says "thank you" to all who helped
make Sow and Grow a success and we look forward
to growing again in the fall. The program was made
possible in part by donations from Garden Study Club,
Million Dollar Round Table and Cox Charities.

Hot Hints for Your Trees |
|
|
|
Summertime and the living ain't easy for city trees. It's
time to apply mulch, a young tree's best friend. A
thick layer of pine straw mulch will:
- hold down competing weeds or grass
- retain soil moisture
- prevent soil cracking that can damage new
roots
- protect the trunk from lawnmower damage
- help prevent soil compaction
Before you begin be sure to remove any grass or
weeds from the area surrounding the tree. Once
cleared apply the mulch 2-3 inches deep making a 3-
10 foot circle around the tree. Be sure that the mulch
does not touch the trunk. Follow these simple steps
and your trees should survive the long hot summer.
As we enter Hurricane Season it is important to make
the right decisions for our trees. One of our favorite
tree authorities has just published a refreshing look at
intelligent approaches. This article includes a
statement on trees that survive storm winds.
