Volunteers from the Historic Faubourg Treme
Neighborhood gathered on a beautiful Saturday
morning to ReLeaf their streets with 35 magnolia and
holly trees provided by Parkway Partners through
the "10 for the Hood" Neighborhood Tree Planting
Project. This coordinated tree planting program
encourages residents to band together to define their
neighborhoods' green infrastructure by planting and
maintaining street trees.
During the first phase of the program approximately
600 trees were requested by 32 neighborhoods with
Two Hundred trees already in the ground in Gentilly,
Lakeview, Esplanade Ridge, New Orleans East,
MidCity, and Central City. Four hundred more are
scheduled for planting during February and March.
Start a neighborhood-planting project now so that your
area can receive free trees during the fall planting
season. Remember, trees increase property values,
offer health benefits and provide food for
wildlife. They look pretty too!
Ten for the Hood is a part of the Parkway Partners
ReLeaf New Orleans initiative that planted Broad
Street and Elysian Fields Avenue. It is an effort made
possible through the partnership with the City of New
Orleans Department of Parks and Parkways and
supported by Alliance for Community Trees, the Almar
Foundation, Booth-Bricker Fund, the Brown
Foundation, Chevron Corporation, Home Depot, the
Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry, the
New Orleans Department of Parks and Parkways, the
Reily Foundation and the Edward Wisner Fund.
