| Cool vs. Green Roofs: | | |
Reflect on the sunny possibilities of these two environmental options:
Cool (or reflective) roofs and green (or vegetative) roofing systems are two of the most effective ways to increase a building's energy efficiency. While similar in some aspects, they are not interchangeable. The two have distinct attributes that should be evaluated and compared prior to installation.
Cool characteristics
"Cool roof is a term encompassing several different product types," says Jessica Clark, marketing manager at Cool Roof Rating Council, Oakland, Calif. "Today there are cool options in all types of roofing materials, from coated metals and coatings, to capsheets and single-plies, to shingles and tiles."
A cool roof can be aluminum, hot-dipped galvanized, or Galvalume. "Cool metal roofing is available in a wide range of profiles and colors, and is able to produce many different looks for a commercial or residential structure," says Mark A. Thimons, P.E., LEED AP BD&C, executive director, Cool Metal Roofing Coalition, Pittsburgh.

That's a Wrap

Understanding housewraps: A decision guide for selecting the right one.
When discussing moisture management solutions in the building industry, it's important to recognize and accept one simple and indisputable reality: water gets into buildings. No matter how tightly a building is constructed, no matter how well it's insulated, no matter what type of exterior cladding is chosen or how expertly it's installed-moisture will always find a way into the building enclosure. Moisture infiltration can undermine structural integrity, cause exterior surfaces to deteriorate, and shorten life of paints and stains. It can also foster mold and rot, that not only causes structural damage but also poses serious health hazards. Ridding the wall assembly of liquid water and water vapor as quickly as possible (before it can damage structural components) is what moisture management is all about.

| OSHA - Fall Prevention Campaign | | |
FALLS ARE THE LEADING CAUSE OF DEATH IN CONSTRUCTION. In 2010, there were 264 fall fatalities (255 falls to lower level) out of 774 total fatalities in construction. These deaths are preventable.
Falls can be prevented and lives can be saved through three simple steps:
This website is part of OSHA's nationwide outreach campaign to raise awareness among workers and employers about the hazards of falls from ladders, scaffolds and roofs. The educational resources page gives workers and employers information about falls and how to prevent them. There are also training tools for employers to use and posters to display at their worksites. Many of the new resources target vulnerable workers with limited English proficiency.

Cash Flow Anemia
| | |
Cash flow has been called the contractor's lifeblood. Unfortunately, in this dire economy, there's a lot of bleeding out there.
This article is about cash flow, the movement of money into and out of a business. With few projects to go around, however, the real story, as with most stories today, is the economy.
The construction economy is so atrocious, the number of projects to work on so few, that most subcontractors compete on price. They bid low to land jobs in order to maintain a measure of liquidity. Get the work first, then tap the reserves and hope for a happy ending. Will this situation ever improve? Probably not anytime soon.
