| Florida Contract Activity Surges 21% in October | |

Two of Florida's three construction categories experienced double-digit percentage gains in the volume of new contracts in October, according to McGraw-Hill Construction, publisher of Engineering News-Record. The state generated nearly $1.8 billion in new construction contracts during the month, a 21% increase over the same period of a year ago.

| Developers start to jockey for casino sites | |
Governor Deval Patrick has yet to sign legislation authorizing casino gambling in Massachusetts, but casino developers are already putting down their markers.
Ameristar Casinos Inc., based near Las Vegas, this week announced it will buy a 41-acre industrial site for a possible casino in Springfield, making a splashy $16 million investment it hopes will show its commitment to the region.

| For homebuilders, price increases hit the drywall | |
Drywall makers plan 35% hike in 2012
Still trying to emerge from a lousy homebuilding market, local residential builders and remodelers are in store for another challenge in 2012: steep price increases in drywall products.
National Gypsum Properties, a North Carolina-based provider of drywall products, recently announced plans to raise drywall prices 35 percent effective Jan. 1, and other manufacturers are following suit.
Manufacturers are blaming the poor economy.

 Alabama's tough new law targeting undocumented Mexican and Central American workers has resulted in a sudden shortage of skilled labor for builders and commercial construction contractors, according to a report in the Birmingham News ("Birmingham construction job fair seeks new workers," by Roy L. Williams).
