Hopes for 2011 Construction Turnaround Pinned to Housing, Commercial Building | |

With nonresidential building retreating from a strong December and residential building losing some steam, the value of new construction starts retreated 6% in January, according to McGraw-Hill Construction. Construction starts last month proceeded at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of $423.4 billion. Nonresidential building in January dropped 13% to $138.3 billion at an annual rate, following a 27% gain in December.
And residential building dropped 7% in January to a yearly pace of $118.8 billion, after showing modest improvement during the previous five months.
Reporting from Florida, Ken Ringe, vice chair of NAHB's Commercial Builders Council Board of Trustees and president of Bayview Construction Corp. in Stuart, said that commercial builders in the state saw a more auspicious start to the new year.

NJ Anticipates Major Expansion For Stalled Xanadu Project

Record, The; Bergen County, N.J.
A deal under which the operators of Mall of America would take over the stalled Xanadu project from a group of creditors has yet to be completed, nearly two months after a preliminary letter of intent was signed and announced.
But Meadowlands Sports Complex officials and Governor Christie's chief negotiator said Thursday that the project is still expected to be revived soon -- and that its first phase could grow larger than the current 2.3 million square feet.
