Architecture Billings Index Continues Positive Momentum

aiaWashington, D.C. - January 19, 2010 On the heels of its highest mark since 2007, the Architecture Billings Index (ABI) jumped more than two points in December. As a leading economic indicator of construction activity, the ABI reflects the approximate nine to twelve month lag time between architecture billings and construction spending.

Four Simple Strategies for Making Green Building More Cost Effective

Reducing waste, improving efficiencies can make up for higher costs in equipment, cerification paperwork.

  

A chief argument some builders make against building green is the added cost, particularly in a down economy. But Steve Bertasso, senior associate at True North Development, told attendees at the 2011 International Builders' Show that entry-level green can be achieved for the same cost of a code-built house.

 

"Sustainable building," he said, "is the perfect balance between environmental impact, cost, and the needs of the consumer."

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) announced today it is withdrawing its proposed interpretations regarding noise and sound control in the workplace. The agency cited the need for more resources as well as pressure from Congressional leaders as the reason for withdrawing the interpretation.

Economists are more optimistic about the recovery than they were just a few months ago, significantly upgrading their forecasts for 2011 as consumers open their wallets.

When asked to predict, nine of 10 economists said they're more optimistic than three months ago, according to a USA TODAY survey of 46 economists conducted Jan. 13-19.
