Greetings!

This issue kicks off a new series about creating your own prototype. We hope this series will help you understand what you can do to make your own prototype and save yourself a lot of money. This first article is about appearance, or concept, models.

We also have an article about how much protection you get from a patent when dealing with companies who have a history of stealing ideas. This is an important article for every inventor to read.

Don't forget to read the Packaging Diva's article about packaging for boomers and check out the information on her Packaging BootCamp. There are also two upcoming Intellectual Property Conferences that might interest you.

Making Your Prototype ? Part 1

Do it yourself appearance prototypes

Prototypes go through many stages and sometimes you will only realize at the end that you need to fundamentally change your product and need to start over. But this process is very helpful and worthwhile so you can get the best product out on the market with the best manufacturing processes giving you the lowest costs and highest profits.

How Much Protection Does My Patent Give Me?

Dealing with manufacturers and distributors who have a history of stealing ideas

How do I protect my idea? For most inventors, the answer is simple: get a patent. But is that the whole story?

To begin with, patents are all of different strengths; you can either have a strong or weak patent. Patent strength does not depend on what type of patent you get, but instead on the wording of the patent. For instance, a patent could cover all aspects of your product, or maybe only one aspect of your product is patentable. Maybe all the protection you need is over that one aspect, but maybe not. But all of that aside, assuming you have a patent with perfect protection, are you still safe? The sad answer is no, but don't despair, there are steps you can take to give yourself a reasonable assurance that you will be safe.
