This month we have a great story about the inventor of earmuffs, Chester Greenwood. We also have an article titled Giving a Little to Get a Whole Lot.   • Many inventors are very protective of their idea and the last thing they would want to do is to give away part of it, but many times giving away part of your idea is a winning strategy. In this article we will cover some of the winning ways to give away part of your idea in return for a whole lot more. To start out, unless your product actually sells sometime in the future, it is not worth anything. Right now, if your idea has any value, the value is tied to its potential, not any actual value. So to realize that your idea is not worth anything unless it actually sells should help you see that giving a little of your idea for a chance of success isn't really giving up any value because your idea is worthless unless it sells. We will begin with my favorite example of creatively giving away part of an idea in order to make huge returns.

  • Inventor Story: Chester Greenwood
  • This month I wanted to write about Chester Greenwood, one of America's most influential inventors. The Smithsonian Institute named him one of America's top 15 inventors and he accumulated over 130 patents. The invention he is best known for is earmuffs. Way back in 1873, when Greenwood was only 15 years old, he came up with his idea for earmuffs. He was living in Maine, in the days before stocking caps. While Greenwood was ice skating, his ears became very cold because the rimmed hats popular at that time offered no ear protection. To protect his ears, he tried wrapping a scarf around his head, but that was not too successful.
