Greetings!
This month we have a great story about the inventor
of earmuffs, Chester Greenwood. We also have an
article titled Giving a Little to Get a Whole Lot.
This issue we also have a great article by a guest
columnist: the Packaging Diva. The article has her
packaging predictions for 2006. Please write to us
and let us know what kind of articles you are
interested in. We want to make this newsletter as
helpful as possible.

Give a Little to Get a Whole Lot

Many inventors are very protective of their idea and
the last thing they would want to do is to give away
part of it, but many times giving away part of your
idea is a winning strategy. In this article we will
cover some of the winning ways to give away part of
your idea in return for a whole lot more.
To start out, unless your product actually sells
sometime in the future, it is not worth anything.
Right now, if your idea has any value, the value is
tied to its potential, not any actual value. So to
realize that your idea is not worth anything unless
it actually sells should help you see that giving a
little of your idea for a chance of success isn't
really giving up any value because your idea is
worthless unless it sells. We will begin with my
favorite example of creatively giving away part of
an idea in order to make huge returns.

Inventor Story: Chester Greenwood

This month I wanted to write about Chester
Greenwood, one of America's most influential
inventors. The Smithsonian Institute named him one
of America's top 15 inventors and he accumulated
over 130 patents. The invention he is best known
for is earmuffs.
Way back in 1873, when Greenwood was only 15 years
old, he came up with his idea for earmuffs. He was
living in Maine, in the days before stocking caps.
While Greenwood was ice skating, his ears became
very cold because the rimmed hats popular at that
time offered no ear protection. To protect his
ears, he tried wrapping a scarf around his head, but
that was not too successful.

Yet, new products and new players appear every day.
Despite it all, packaging is virtually recession
proof. Simply put, a product needs a package to sell
it, so where would we be without it? Here are some
