| Greetings!
The holiday season is in full swing, don't forget to take time to Invest in your Own Health! Burning the candle at both ends brings your immune system down and the extra cold weather now will also take its toll on your body.
Rich, festive food is fun and is often pricey and unbalancing to the body. Eat simpler and nutritiously before attending holiday events and reap the benefits both with your health and your pocket book! |

Breast Thermography is a Safe and Painless Option for Detecting Changes in Breast Tissue
The radiation associated with annual screening mammography could be placing high-risk women in even more jeopardy of developing breast cancer, particularly if they start screening at a young age or have frequent exposure, according to new research presented here at the Radiological Society of North America 95th Scientific Assembly and Annual Meeting.
"The take-home message here is that high-risk women who are younger should be careful about mammography screening," she told Medscape Radiology. "Because they are young, they also have dense breasts, which poses a problem with mammography. They should explore alternative screening methods."
Studies show that an abnormal infrared image is the single most important marker of high risk for developing breast cancer, 10 times more significant than a family history of the disease.
Consequently, in patients with a persistent abnormal thermogram, the examination results become a marker of higher future cancer risk. Depending upon certain factors, re-examinations are performed at appropriate intervals to monitor the breasts. This gives a woman time to take a pro-active approach by working with her doctor to improve her breast health. By maintaining close monitoring of her breast health with infrared imaging, self breast exams, clinical examinations, mammography, and other tests, a woman has a much better chance of detecting cancer at its earliest stage and preventing invasive tumor growth.
Dr. Howard makes breast thermography screenings available at regular intervals throughout the year.
Next Screening Date is January 8th, 2010

Healthy Holiday Options
Looking for a healthy appetizer to bring to the next party or gathering?? Here are 2 recipes that will fill you up and hopefully curtail other cravings at the sweets table! (I've tried them both and they are winners!)
Add sliced almonds to them for extra protein!
Root Vegetable Sticks with Roasted Garlic Dip
these root vegetables make for a healthful appetizer that wont overpower other foods
6 Medium Carrots (trimmed, peeled & cut into sticks)
6 Medium Red & Gold Beets (peeled & cut into carrot like sticks)
2 1/2 Tbl Olive Oil
Garlic Dip
1 head garlic
1 15oz can Cannellini Beans (liquid reserved)
1 Tbs lemon juice
1 tsp grated lemon zest
1 tsp dried basil
For Garlic Dip, roast garlic in foil in 450 oven with papery top from head of garlic to cloves exposed - roast 30-40 min until garlic feels soft when lightly squeezed. Squeeze cloves from skin, place in food processor with beans, lemon juice, zest & basil along with 1 Tbs of olive oil. Pulse mixture until creamy and smooth adding some reserved bean liquid if necessary.
Toss Carrots & Beets with oil, season with salt/pepper. Spread in single layer on baking sheet. Roast at 450 degrees for 25 min or until carrots & beets are tender but not soft. Cool. Serve with Garlic Dip on the side!
