Raw New England Community

Marvelous May 2008

Sproutman 2Welcome To All Raw New Englanders

A key feature of the raw food lifestyle is family. This month we feature David O'Brien and his daughter Mikaela. Below is an interview and their journey to raw foods.

The New England Raw Community is looking forward to spring, enjoying the great outdoors and a true parade of mother nature's wonderful bounty.

And, spring has sprung and unbeknownst to most of us, millions of wild sprouts are popping up everywhere. In addition to wild sprouts, home grown sprouts are a staple for raw foodists. To get a better understanding of adding sprouts to our daily regimen of abundance, the one and only Sproutman, Steve Meyerowitz, will be featured at the Waltham Pot Luck and Speaker Series on May 6. for more info, see below or email betsy@RawNewEnglandCommunity.com

Livingstone

Full Day Event - York Maine
Mr. Livingstone (photo to the right) Raw Food Advocate, will be at the Perrin House for a 1 day event where he tells his amazing story of transformation and how what you eat can shape your state of consciousness. Saturday, May 3rd, 11 am to 4 pm See details below.

Recipes
We have about 200 recipes now on the website forum. Thanks for everyone that is contributing and all the photos will be in within 1 week. Keep contributing.

To make it easy for others to quickly find and use these great recipes, here are some simple guidelines:

1) The recipe should have a unique title. Salad for a title is great but may need a little more info. What we can do is, instead of just saying Salad, list the main ingredients as the name. For example, It could be the Kale Cabbage Parsnip Blueberry Persimmon Salad.

2) Also, please remember to put your name and  the source of your recipe so that appropriate people are given credit.

3) List Quantities for the ingredients

4) List the instructions and steps

5) A great example for recipes is listed under the Jennifer Cornbleet Recipe later in the newsletter.

Thanks for your attention.

Raw Family of the Month - Meet David O'Brien and Mikaela O'Brien
David OBrienMy name is David O'Brien and I am passionate about raw foods!!! I know the powerful effects it has on a body on a cellular level. I live in a state of complete and absolute physical bliss every second of everyday. It is so amazing and I owe it all too raw foods. I began this eye opening journey 4 years ago. I saw the DVD the Peaceable Kingdom and I became a vegetarian overnight. I had never made the connection until I saw that DVD. A year later I became a Vegan.

I was then fortunate enough to come across raw foods. I attended Alissa Cohen's 5 day training and it changed my life like it does for so many. Thanks again Alissa for all the light you have brought into my life as well as all the light you shine into the world everyday!!!!!! I then decided to follow my passion and I opened up The Institute for Healthy Living and started working with people who were choosing to get healthy. I have met some amazing people on this raw food journey.

One of the first people I met was Joe Lucier. He has been there from the beginning for me and has been a huge support for me. Joe would come to my house one night a week and we would make raw food. These are the kind of people you "get" to meet on this path. He is so passionate about raw foods and is willing to do whatever he can to promote raw foods and community. He has been a huge inspiration to me. Thanks Joe!!!! I feel truly blessed to so gratefully embrace the raw food lifestyle and get to eat the most spectacular foods on the planet.

I have grown as a person in every way physically, mentally, emotionally and most important spiritually!! I believe that the pathway to consciousness is absolutely through eating raw foods.  I have endless amount of energy and feel so "light." I love sharing my passion with others and I have seen first hand the miracles that take place when people choose to nourish themselves through live food. I also went to Living Light for 3 weeks and work as a kitchen angel. It was a great learning experience for me. One of the greatest gifts of raw foods is that you get to share it with others.  I am forever thankful that I am able to teach my beautiful daughter how to nourish her body and mind through her food choices. She is so healthy and vibrant and I love every second that we spend together. Please visit my website www.theinstituteforhealthyliving.com.

My Name is Mikaela O'Brien and I am fifteen years old. My Dad has opened my eyes to the reasons why it is healthy to eat raw foods. I am so happy that he discovered this information, I feel so healthy and I have so much more energy. My Dad's journey has not been an easy one, but I admire his determination to try to educate others about what they are eating. My Dad has helped me in so many ways, such as my own diet and I know that I will never have to worry about getting cancer. I know that my children will be extremely healthy with my Dads help. I thoroughly enjoy nourishing my body with the spectacular raw food that my Dad creates. I am very grateful for all that my dad has taught me about raw foods. I hope to also inform people of the reasons why eating raw foods are the healthiest way to eat throughout my life. I am so happy to be eating raw foods and I have met so many great people along the way and I am excited for the journey still to come.

Steve Meyerowitz was christened "Sproutman" in the 1970s in a feature article in Vegetarian Times because his New York City apartment was always filled with gardens of mini-vegetables. They were part of his lifetime fight against chronic allergies and asthma. After 20 years of disappointment with orthodox medicine, he became symptom-free through his use of diet, juices, and fasting. In 1980, he founded "The Sprout House", a "no-cooking" school in New York City teaching the benefits of a living foods diet.

Steve is a health crusader and author of 10 books including Power Juices Super Drinks, Wheatgrass Nature's Finest Medicine, Juice Fasting and Detoxification, and Food Combining and Digestion. His most recent book is "The Organic Food Guide: How to Shop Smarter and Eat Healthier." He has been featured on PBS, the Home Shopping Network, TV Food Network, and in Better Nutrition, Prevention, Organic Gardening and Flower & Garden Magazines. His sprouting inventions, such as the "Hemp Sprout Bag" are sold nationwide. You can visit him at www.Sproutman.com

Spring into Spring with Fresh Organic Wheat Grass & Sprouts - Where to buy them?

Fresh Organic Wheat Grass & Sprouts !

What:  Opportunity to buy FRESH Wheatgrass & Sprouts in trays or cut in sealed bags. All greens are cut to order the day of delivery.  You save $12 or more by buying and juicing your own.   A tray or one pound bag costing $12, produces  14- 16 one ounce shots of wheat grass  juice.
Wheatgrass

Why: Fresh wheat grass provides an abundance of all the raw materials (oxygen, hydrogen & amino acids) that our body needs.  The essential reason for fresh versus freeze dried is that the original state provides all the enzymes that the body needs for complete absorption. Ann Wigmore in her famous "Wheatgrass Book"  writes "Wheatgrass increases the red blood cell count, lowers blood pressure and cleanses the blood, organs and gastrointestinal tract of debris.  It stimulates metabolism and bodily enzyme systems.  It stimulates the thyroid, correcting obesity and indigestion and restores alkalinity to the blood."

Located at 27 Broadway avenue in Mystic, Ct, my family and I were lucky enough to make our first trip there yesterday.  The cafe is very sweet and raw friendly!  The food was delicious, and we can't wait to try more of the scrumptious sounding raw food on the menu.    A comfortable atmosphere, Citrus is adjacent to Health in Harmony Holistic Center.  Both businesses are located within a newly renovated building in downtown Mystic, with careful consideration taken to create a green environment.  860-536-7007

YAY! Sunshine! We're getting sunshine!! Matt has already gone on his first motorcycle trip of the season. YIPPEEEEEE!!! We've had a LOT of snow this year and now we're experiencing a LOT of mud! So stay on those main roads unless you really needed a new muffler anyway...

    RAW HAPS FOR THIS WEEK
    · so all the stores should still have plenty of food in their grab and go/grocery and/or bakery sections. Currently there is Chick-UN Salad & NOT Tuna at Hunger Mountain Coop, Sweet Clover Market, City Market and Healthy Living. Sweet Clover and Healthy Living have already got the party started with RAWsome Chilli and the other 2 stores will have that soon enough! Healthy Living also is carrying the Eggless Egg Salad still. Every store but Healthy Living also has the God and Goddess Butters and if the stores are out, hold tight - they'll be restocked soon.
I just heard yesterday how much this person enjoyed the sweet & savory flavors of the Chick-UN salad - woo-hoooo!!! thanks for the props!
    · I had a fun time being interviewed yesterday for the Bridge, a local paper out of Montpelier. My kids were with me during the interview as Sylvia, the food writer, arrived shortly after the kiddies came home from school. The kids were hungry and wanting snacks so it was perfect timing to have a reporter tasting food that your kids are also diggin' and chompin' down - Be on the look out for this article which should be out in a week or so - she has a wonderful purpose for local food writing, so it sounds anyway. I loved telling her about the permaculture design that Matthew Delorey designed for us around the exterior of the house as well as the mural painting that Robin Merriam is working for us on the front of the building. Talking about the dreams of the place only further ignites all the wonderful possibilities. Baby steps though. We just have to keep chunking away at what we can do each day...
    · Today (Wednesday) is the Green Smoothie workshop at Hunger Mountain Coop. We are full and even have people on the waiting list. I am very excited to share these recipes - I've been taste testing for weeks now to get 3 good ones to share. (There's so many options for green smoothies!)
I got asked today if I do the workshops at any other places and I hope that the answer will be YES soon! I really do love doing the classes and workshops the most. That whole "teaching a person how to fish" kind of thing. But then again, making food for the stores also fulfills my own love of making food. My college friend paid us a visit recently and told me I finally found the perfect job because I've always loved buying/making large quantities of food. I looked at her and thought: "she's right! I've been crazy like this for YEARS!" hahaha
    · nut milk bags. OH BOY! These things are flying off the shelves. In fact - they don't even make it TO the shelves! We've gotten so many orders in fact that we've needed extra hands! And we can possibly use more! If you are fast and efficient with a sewing machine, please give us a call ASAP at 802-223-2111. We're shipping them out to individuals and to companies around the US, Canada and even to England! Yowsers!

    INTERESTING INFO TO SHARE
    · this one just came to me from a listserve I'm on and this is so awesome and beautiful, I just have to share it. It's a very short video and website. This family in SoCal got rid of their entire lawn and put in an organic garden as a way of taking back control of their food source. I've been telling Matt for years I want to get rid of the lawn and just make it all garden space. Look at what you can do with a little space - this is SO awesome: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eyXFcbFoAd8 - they even have a website: http://pathtofreedom.com/
    · another cool thing: apparently people around the world are trying to either have a ban on plastic bags or put a tax on them to make using them less convenient for customers/stores: http://reusablebags.typepad.com/newsroom/2008/04/plastic-bag-ban.html - the original article is here: http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/pf/74875718.html - this is very exciting because it's not good enough to say we recycle - it's good to actually use less stuff! I think that's actually a book title: Use Less Stuff: Environmental Solutions for Who We Really Are. Anyway, Hip-Hooray for these people around the world waking up to the endless nastiness of plastic.
    · Which reminds me: please know that we reuse packing materials as well as use biodegradable food packaging - if we use packing peanuts, they are made from corn starch and we only use them if we've received them from other places. I'm working on finding little baggies that are made from potatoes and/but all our food packaging is biodegradable. I've been talking to places that I buy from as well as places that I sell to and asking if they will also put an effort to have their vendors use biodegradable packaging. I mean, particularly for organic (& raw) food - why put that beautiful food in crap plastic clamshells that get dumped and discarded in some landfill? Hey, let's have more awareness and ACTION on sustainable & renewable & compostable products. Please support people/places that are trying to work on the 200 year plan...
    · wanna know how to make eating healthier more affordable? well, look no further! check out the Raw Food Made Economical page: http://www.vt-fiddle.com/rawfood/raw_food_made_economical_tips.php and here's some warm/fuzzies that came in about this e-guide book:
"I like how you included quality links and didn't include too many of them because that can be overwhelming. For example, on the sprouting section, you included one link which is awesome because then someone like me can say "huh, let me go here and find out more." You saved me some work by finding a good resource."
"Awesome tip about produce managers, I never thought of that!"
"I loved the layout of your pub, it's beautiful and easy to read."
"And my favorite part of all? That you throw in recipes and examples, talk about what your own experience has been (that you were intimidated to try sprouting at first b/c I'd like to try that too but seems complicated so I haven't -- but hearing you say that makes me think oh I should really give it a try), and the lovely end note where you ask for feedback and encourage people to treat themselves and the earth well. I love your kind outlook and it shines through your writing."
"Nice work and I'm excited to go look at these links!"
    THANKS!

    AND NOW FOR THAT RECIPE:
After all the green smoothies I've been trying, how about a purple one! This has been adapted slightly from a recipe I found on gone raw.
    Pretty Purple Smoothie
    serves 2-3
    Ingredients
        * 1 cup blueberries, fresh or frozen
        * 1 - 2 cups filtered water*
        * 1 banana, fresh or frozen
        * 2 Tbsp ground flax or sesame seeds
        * 2 Tbsp ground hemp seeds*
        * 1 tablespoon ground ginger, or 1 inch fresh, peeled
        * 1 tiny squirt of raw agave particularly if you are serving to the kiddies
        * optional: tiny squirt of lemon
    Preparation
Blend ingredients for about 30 seconds in a blender. Pour in your fav glass and enjoy! It's a gorgeous color and with the flax/sesame and hemp seeds, you'll be adding things like calcium, protein and nice fatty acids to your pretty drink. *Alternatively, you can make your own hemp milk and use that in place of the hemp seeds and water. Either way is delicious.  NOTE: Frozen fruits make a thicker smoothies as does less water.

    Garden Wraps
    Jennifer Cornbleet - www.LearnRawFood.com

    Makes 1 serving

    6 thin slices onion
    1/2 cup thinly sliced mushrooms

1/2 carrot, grated (about 1/4 cup)
1/4 cucumber, seeded and cut into lengthwise strips
    1/2 avocado, sliced

Toss the onions and mushrooms in the tamari. Marinate for 10 minutes. Drain off any excess tamari. Lay the collard leaf flat, with the inside facing up, and the stem parallel to you.
Layer the onions and mushrooms, cucumbers, carrot, and avocado on the collard leaf. Roll up the leaf, tucking in the ends as you roll. Slice the roll into two pieces. Serve immediately.

Let's support the organic farmers in Massachusetts

Organic foods have a higher vitamin and mineral content. They are more flavorful and the farmers who plant them deserve our support.

According to the 2006 census there are only about 6100 farms left in MA. The 5 top agriculture commodities in MA are Greenhouse/nursery plants, cranberries, Dairy, Corn and Apples.

Over 50% of all farms in MA sell less than $ 5000 per year and 82.3% of all farms sell less than $ 50.000 worth of products. That means the majority of farmers can't live on the income that their farm produces. Subsequently much land has been sold to developers and open space has been lost. Between 1985 and 1999 202.583 acres were converted to development in MA. The area lost to development during this period is equivalent to the size of 30 cities and towns on or within Routes 128 and 95.

HEALING MIRACLES FOR THE INDIVIDUAL AND PLANET
Barry Harris, Raw Foodist, co-contributor and worker at the Hippocrates
Institute with Ann Wigmore in boston, is presenting a class about his observations of healing and spirituality.

HEALING MIRACLES FOR THE INDIVIDUAL AND PLANET, AT Aranama Eco-Studio, 72 Langley Rd., Newton Center, MA, on Friday, Saturday, Sunday, April 25, 26, and 27, and Saturday, Sunday, May 3, May 4. contact Barry at (617) -997-8672 - cell, or Barrymh2002@yahoo.com
HEALING MIRACLES FOR THE INDIVIDUAL AND PLANET THROUGH SPIRITUAL EMPOWERMENT given at Aranama Eco-Center, 72 Langley Rd., Newton Center, MA, on Friday, Saturday, Sunday, April 25, 26, and 27, and Saturday, Sunday, May 3, May 4.

Workshop Also Given at Theosophical Society in Arlington Center, 21 Maple Street, Arlington, MA on Friday, Saturday, Sunday, May 23, 24, and 25th, and Saturday, Sunday, May 31, June 1st.

Are physical healing miracles possible?  Yes!! Barry Harris was inspired to do his research on the source of miracles, by seeing many miraculous recoveries while working at Hippocrates with Dr. Ann Wigmore, founder of the live food movement. The latest scientific discoveries  in quantum physics, mind/body medicine, para-psychology, cellular biology, energy medicine, and neuro-physiology all support a model of the universe in which energy is conscious, and our body is not a machine, but is an energy/information body constantly being created by our moment to moment choices with regard to lifestyle, diet, and mental/emotional state.

What makes my class unique??  In  this workshop, we will create a new model of spirituality, in order to show we have been hypnotized by our culture to a disempowering understanding of spirituality, and an over-evaluation of materialist science as ultimate truth.  We will prove in this workshop with my new spiritual model that real spiritual experience is the only source of power in the universe, and the only source of power to heal our bodies and create miracles, for it is the context of self-awareness and responsibility that produces the most coherent energy patterns.

Students have said Barry's class is the next step after "What the Bleep Do We Know."
$400 at door; $350 with non-refundable $100 deposit; $300 if May workshop fully paid before May 1st.  Weekends can be taken separately, for $200, and $150 with discount.

    Maintaining Healthy Lifestyle after Catastrophe

If you have been a raw fooder for a length of time, you have probably experienced remarkable health benefits. You most likely are confident that a raw food diet would help you heal faster and more thoroughly, perhaps even save your life in the event of a serious accident or injury.

While western medicine is effective in the emergency treatment of physical trauma, many of us would agree, western medicine is less effective in long term healing. If you are unconscious or heavily sedated in a hospital, who is going to make sure you get the nutrition and care you need? The hospital staff would be, at least, ignorant at worst, hostile to alternative nutrition. Many of us lack the support of a life partner or family in the changes we have made in our diet and they may be unavailable to advocate for your dietary needs.

A group of us will be having a series of informal discussions on these issues, Our goal is to form a core of committed raw fooders to address these issues and to set up a system of support (for example arranging for meals, becoming a healthcare proxy, educating healthcare providers and family) for ourselves in the event of catastrophic injury.

Meetings will be held in East Cambridge. Call for location, date and time #6174922340
