Movies and News Articles

Each month, we will have movies and important articles. This month, an article on GMO  2 movies including and a movie narrated by Paul McCartney, about Vegetarian and Vegan ethics and the global impact. It is very interesting and gives an excellent perspective on the relationship between plant based diets, conservation and sustainability, as well as compassion. Also, there is a video of elephants painting. Hopefully, no cruelty was involved in this training but, I think the elephants are pretty good.

Raw Family of the Month - Meet Adrienne Martin and her family

Martin

We are the Martin Family. John, Kaia and me, Adrienne. I am an acupuncturist, reiki practitioner, nutritional and wellness counselor and raw food enthusiast. It is my goal to help as many people as I can achieve the abundant health I know is their birthright. One of the best ways to achieve abundant health is to increase the amount of organic, raw, fresh fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds in your diet. This is what has made a huge difference in my life...here is my story...

In the fall of 2004, a few months after the birth of our daughter, I was feeling just awful. I had no energy, my outlook on life was dismal and the knee inflammation I had been dealing with most of my life was at its' all time worst. My mother and a friend of hers with cancer had been to Hippocrates Health Institute in Florida and they had had an unbelievable, transformative experience there. My mother had told me about the power of green juices and I had been incorporating them into my diet for almost a year, but not on a regular basis. It was my dream to go to Hippocrates and heal myself - body, mind and soul. The power of intention is strong, for in March 2005, I got to spend 3 weeks there. I lost 15 pounds, my cholesterol dropped 35 points, my body let go of the most unbelievable rash I had ever seen and I was feeling true joy for the first time since I was a small child.

When I returned home, it was a bit overwhelming to stay 100% raw and committed. But I tried and kept trying. I was feeling lonely on my journey, so I decided to start raw pot luck in Boston, where we were living at the time. At the first one,
It was me, Joe Lucier and my friend Carla. A few months later we had about 10 people come and I was elated!  Little did I know that a woman who shared my vision, Betsy Bragg, was about to offer to help and would turn this little pot luck into the amazing community gathering it is today. She called in the summer of 2006, asking if she could attend the potluck and I explained that we were moving and there would no longer be a Boston raw potluck. So she offered to host it and as we know, the rest is history.

Since this time my health and healing journey have taken many turns. Currently, I am working as an acupuncturist and I give classes and consultations on achieving abundant health. I have a youtube show that we are developing into an actual TV show. I am working on a few books and have many speaking engagements. The best part of my journey has been that I have been able to take what I have learned and share it with my family. Our daughter enjoys tons of raw food and her health and well-being are fantastic. All of us enjoy a green smoothie every morning.

Here is our favorite Green Smoothie:

1 banana
1-2 cups mango
1 medium head flat-leaf parsley
1-2 cups other greens, such as sunflower sprouts, kale, spinach
1-2 T. agave
1 T. maca powder
2 T. hemp or flax oil
3 cups water
Blend and enjoy!

Organic is very good, but  Veganic is Better............

Carrot With AttitudeSupport your local farmer New Veganic CSA Pick-up in Waltham as well as at Harvest Coop in Central Square

Veganic (Organically grown without the use of animal derived ingredients) CSA Opportunity, Deadline fast approaching!

A CSA is community supported agriculture where the produce is sold to share-holders instead to the public.  A Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) opportunity is currently available through Heavens Harvest Farm, of New Braintree, Massachusetts.  Heavens Harvest Farm is willing to provide for a minimum of 40 people at one drop off point or 20 at each of two drop off points, a bushel and 1/9 size box (roughly 2 ½' x 1 ½ x 1 ½', the size of the average apple box) of veganically grown produce, with the main focus on greens and salad vegetable and regular farmfresh produce for all your vegetable needs.   Produce weight varies with the season, but in the height of the season, a full share can weigh up to 30 pounds.  Less than $40 a week for a full share will feed 2 to 3 vegans.  Produce will be dropped off on Thursdays.

WRNEC members,Stephen and Barbara Desouza, located at 104 Summit Street, Waltham 02451, have kindly offered to be a pick-up location.  Don't miss this opportunity to get sustainable veganically fertilized, non-animal based, non-pesticide, non-hormone treated, anti-biotic free farm produce.  Deadline of March 26 is fast-approaching. Varying your greens is important for health. This is a great chance to do this with abundance. These shares are customized to have a variety of greens as well as other delicious farm vegetables.

Beginning in mid June, each raw food community CSA member will receive a share box containing a combination of greens, including a  variety of lettuces, 4-5 Asian greens (including mizuna and tat soi), bok choy, Chinese cabbages, beets and beet greens, collards, kale, spinach,  purslane, lambs quarters (if seed is available), dandelion greens, red and green cabbages, broccoli greens, Swiss chard,  (3 varieties), arugula, amaranth greens,  mesclun mix. cucumbers, summer squash, snap beans, peas, broccoli, culinary herbs, carrots, celery and tomatoes.   The farmer is also open to other greens suggestions that are agreed upon and desired by all members (as long as seed is available and growing conditions permit.)

Members bring boxes and bags to transfer their produce from share box for transport, and share boxes are then broken down and stored at the drop off point for Heavens Harvest to pick up at time of next delivery, for reuse.

Cost of a full share is $575  and $350 for a half share.  Friends may join as one member and split or quarter the share and cost themselves.

Deadline for formation of thisCSA is March 26.  Lisa  Bouley will be at our March 25th event to provide more information and to sign up interested members.  Payment will be accepted that evening or arrangements can be made for mailing checks, to be received no later than March 29th.  Contact Lisa@vejnaturals.com  or 617-605-7031 for more information or to sign up today.

The farmer of Heavens Harvest Farm like most Americans followed the typical lifestyle of the day including too much stress, poor eating habits and unwillingness to see it takes effort to achieve and maintain good health.  He suffered the typical maladies of our generation.  Part of his regaining his health was certainly the practice of organic foods, their growing as well as their  preparation.

Veganic Share Produce - Subdividing Shares

It's exciting that we have an opportunity to be part of the first Veganic CSA in New England, and that the Harvest (Cambridge) Food Coop is one of the drop off points.  I've been buying from the Organic Farmer's Markets for years, but this is Organic from the top down and bottom up, so I'm thrilled.  I'd love to share a half share with someone at the bargain price of $175 each. If you're interested, please call Marie at 617-776-6287.

If interested in sharing a half of a share (1/4 each), contact
Aimee DeBarbien adebarb@hotmail.com or 617-335-8693 for pick-up in Waltham.

Looking for someone who would like to split a 1/2 share with me. My name is Deb Perkins and I live in Natick. My email is flywoman7@hotmail.com. Email me if interested.

Looking to share with someone, call Lisa Bouley, 617-605-7031, who will try to match you up.

Grind flax seed in a coffee grinder or dry Vita-Mix.  Add kelp and sun-dried tomatoes to ground flax and blend well.  Pour the mixture into a food processor, and add walnuts, bell pepper, and celery. Puree ingredients.  Transfer to a bowl.  Stir in whole psyllium husk, ground pumpkin seds, parsley, and onion.  Mix well by hand.  Form into balls.  Place "meatballs" on mesh dehydrator sheets, and dehydrate for 6 to 8 hours.  Serve each "meatball" on a nest made from zucchini noodles.  Tastes better than real meat meatballs.

New  Meeting
Winslow, Maine Event

By way of introduction, we are health ministry in
central Maine (Winslow) that teaches the live
food diet. We began our journey into superior
health over eleven years through the efforts of
George and Rhonda Malkmus at Hallelujah Acres,
now based in Shelby, NC (http://www.hacres.com).
The personal health crisis of my ministry sister
Lily, now age 80, compelled us to change our diets
by beginning a juicing program, and making amends
to our lifestyle. Lily's complete recovery from a
death-bed experience was evidence enough
that proper diet has a profound affect on the
body, allowing the body to heal itself ( I have
posted her testimony on the RNEC website).
Truly the action of regeneration is a marvel
to behold, if not a miracle for one to personally
experience. We were so impressed with the
restorative power of the live food diet that we
went through health minister training at
Hallelujah Acres so that I could become a
certified Health Minister with the Malkmuses.
We have been sharing the health message
in central Maine for over ten years. Though
our successes have been slow and the
public generally disinterested in making
what many regard a 'radical' change in their
eating habits, we are seeing the raw message
gain momentum. Our many consistent efforts
are paying off with increased opportunities to
share the health message and help others.

For a few years we did a two hour  'Health Talk'
program on WMHB, Waterville community radio
station. Currently our monthly health meetings
are aired on Channel 7 public access TV out
of Fairfield, Maine. Time/Warner Channel 9
has given us a standing invitation to do a health
show, but plans are currently on hold pending
additional help and finances. However, we are
currently putting together a 'healthy' Video on
Demand for Time/Warner.

Our April HANDS-ON HEALTH meeting will focus
on the "how to's" of organic gardening. Allowing
for the importance of a safe, dependable
food source, it's a good time to consider
'growing healthy!' We have a large, VEGAN
organic garden each yearand encourage
others toward this same style of gardening.
Join us for
HANDS-ON HEALTH,
Thursday, April 10
5:30-7:30PM
at the Winslow Public Library
136 Halifax St.
Winslow

Please pass the word around!
It is our privilege to share. If you
travel our way, there are stores
in our area that carry good
organics. Also, you are welcomed
to stop by and meet us for a
healthy rest stop!

Vermont - Linda Wooliever
Greetings and Raw Salutations!

Hoping you are well and happy! I can't believe that February is almost over. It's just getting more and more fun here. Are you enjoying the perpetual snow storm? I think this is the most snow we've experienced so far since moving to VT almost 5 years ago. Even though it's all white and snowy outside, I have visions of spring: mud. (I'm smiling) And I'm looking forward to it! I'm also looking forward to changing the salad options at the stores as we get into more local produce being available. Anyway, we've got a lot planned
for the months ahead but let's just do one month at a time, shall we?

Introductory class is coming up on Friday, March 28th from 4-8 pm. You don't know a thing about raw foods and just want to get a good start, sample a bunch of good foods and get some good tips and tools for your toolbelt? Well, give me a call at 802-223-2111 and I'll see you next Friday.

Saturday and Sunday, March 29th and 30th is a secondary raw food class. This is for anyone who has a pretty good understanding of raw foods or at least has dabbled with the easy recipes and is looking for more. We'll go into sprouting, dehydrating, juicing, gourmet recipes and you'll have a slew of materials to take with you plus food! Glorious food to eat all weekend long and some to take home with you.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Here's the latest and greatest for Vermont Fiddle Heads - an overview

for the month of March:
        1. I've updated a few pages on the website. Still much more to do though. I've included a sweet and savory page so that you can see what is available in stores and individuals. I also need to get pictures up of the eggless egg salad and the not tuna (and the chilli and the zucchini pasta) - it's all good. Nut milk and sprouting bags: http://www.vt-fiddle.com/rawfood/nut_milk_bags_sprouting_bags.php - these are selling really well and it's keeping Matt quite busy! Thankfully he has hired a friend to help him! yippeeeeee!!

Savory and Sweet Treats: http://www.vt-fiddle.com/rawfood/my_raw_food_treats.php - pictures of the ginger crackers, super orange fudge, super mint fudge, spice cookies and the god and goddess butters. These are available in bulk sizes as well. Just ask. I also just came up with a new sweetie cracker that is VERY tasty. Made with sprouted buckwheat. YUM!I've updated the product page: http://www.vt-fiddle.com/rawfood/
raw-food-equipment.php You can also click on the "market" tab off any page to see what else is for sale. We're offering a "no excuses" approach to adding more raw food into your diet.

        2. We've been selling really well at City Market, Sweet Clover Market and Hunger Mountain Coop and am going to be getting into other stores. The God and Goddess Butter will be at Hunger Mountain Coop starting this next week. I'm making deliveries weekly and am looking for help in making deliveries. If you are interested, please email me or call me at 223-2111. I'm also going to need some help one day a
week to make and package food. Please let me know if you are interested. Thanks so much.

        3. Our potluck dates have moved to the 3rd Thursday of the month from 6-8 pm. We're rotating houses and locations. Last month we were in Richmond and this month we'll be in Montpelier. The next potluck date is scheduled for Thursday March 20th from 6-8 pm. Please check out the meet up site for more details: http://rawfood.meetup.com/282/

        4. The raw food workshops at Hunger Mountain Coop are super fun and I've been working on a few developments there. More to follow in a future newsletter. The next workshop is Tuesday, March 11 where we'll be doing easy, hearty raw breakfast recipes. Please check out the coop's calendar page for more info: http://www.hungermountain.com/ calendar/index.cfm - click on March and then click on the 11th for the details

        5. I'm planning a sprouting/dehydrating class for the last weekend of March. It is a 2 day class that will cover the more complex recipes so if you are looking to expand your knowledge and confidence in making raw food, please contact me for more details.

        6. I'm expecting a delivery soon of cacao products (nibs, powder and butter). I have hemp protein powder here, bee pollen and nuts and seeds in bulk if you need anything that you might not find elsewhere. I have good pricing. Just tell me what you need and I'll hook you up. You know, it's good to list this stuff out. I can see for myself what we're accomplishing.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Here's some fun emails that have recently come to me - thank you for letting me share some warm fuzzies (and thank you for sending me your feedback - we welcome it gladly):

"I wanted to let you know that I very much enjoyed your eggles egg salad and your not tuna salad; I purchased them at Sweet Clover in Essex Junction. They were delicious."

"BTW- just bought your god and goddess butter last night- FABULOUS!!!!!!!!"

"Good morning from PA!  First off, let me say that VT-Fiddle.com has been a terrific tool for me.  I found it through a Google search and literally read through the entire site.  I am a dedicated raw food enthusiast. I love to plant my own flowers, fruits, and vegetables.  Your website has been an amazing source of quality information, and since I will be moving to Vermont shortly your site is a perfect fit!"

"Hiya - was just over at City Market and found your other goodies!! I'm eating your spice cookies now and also have some orange mint fudge in my desk drawer. Those cookies are so good and really hit the spot after a big salad. This weekend I'll have to try your white chocolate as a treat."

I took your raw foods workshop at the Coop last night and it was great, thanks again! It was fun and informative."

"Linda is a great teacher" (from the last raw food workshop at the coop - Aw, shucks. Thanks!)

"i wanted to let you know  how much i enjoy the items you sell thru' the montpelier coop (especially the cashew & walnut items)--they are tasty, satisfying & reasonably priced... thanks for making these raw delights avail for those of us racing around"

"Hi Linda: (this is in regards to the mystery box that I deliver) Thank you Thank you Thank you  what a treat.  I have missed your chili.  The hazelnut fudge is EXCELLENT!!!   The God Butter is FANTASTIC!!!  (haven't tried the goddess yet)  I think these 3 are my favorites!  I tell you--if I lived up your way you would be seeing my face 3x's/day.  It is such a pleasure to be able to order your products and have them delivered to my doorstep! Many Thanks and have a Goddess Day! I almost forgot---after the delicious taste of everything-I then observed the packaging-love your jars (nice shape and labels).  Also your labels on the cookie and cracker package are super!!  Keep up the great work!"

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Today's tip for the day comes to you from Sheila - Thanks Sheila! "I have been sprouting wheat grass seeds and then spreading them out in a round clay dish and letting it grow into wheatgrass ( rinse twice a day and drain the water).  Then when it gets high enough I cut it and chew it to get the sweet juice out of it.  I can usually get 2-3 cuttings out of each batch.  So instead of gum, chew your wheatgrass!!!"

++++++++++++++++++++++++

And now for that recipe:
This time of year we're usually thinking about colors, warmer days and sunshine. Here's a fun recipe that I found on goneraw.com

"California Dreamin" Wheatgrass Smoothie

Rhode Island - Encore!!
Unfortunately, the March potluck will be canceled.  We need to reschedule due to a conflict and the next weekend available isn't until April 26th.  The tropical potluck will be in April.  So, I've held that saturday for us, and May will be on Saturday the 31st, with an edible weed walk and a focus on greens.  If anyone would like to hold an informal gathering, or knows of a great spot to meet from now until then, please contact me, the monthly support has been so wonderful.
I'll send out a reminder for April's potluck as the time comes near.  Thanks for understanding!

Straight to the Source

There have been few experiments as reckless, overhyped and with as little potential upside as the rapid rollout of genetically modified crops.
Last month, the International Service for the Acquisition of Agri-biotech Applications (ISAAA), a pro-biotech nonprofit, released a report highlighting the proliferation of genetically modified crops. According to ISAAA, biotech crop area grew 12 percent, or 12. 3 million hectares, to reach 114. 3 million hectares in 2007, the second highest area increase in the past five years.

Kallari Rainfamily (chocolate) is the only indigenous cooperative located in Ecuador that harvests, process and markets their own line of organic, vegan dark chocolate, eliminating need for toxic gas fumigation and added chemicals when exporting. The result is award-wining quality, as well as the highest possible standard of living improvement for all families by providing economic alternatives to the Rainforest and to logging, mining and petroleum exploitation.  $4.00 each and three for $10.50

Klean Kanteen Water Bottles 27 oz. Hydrating with this eco-friendly, reusable stainless steel water bottle provides a safe, non-leaching and toxic-free alternative to plastic and other lined metal containers.   Made from high quality food-grade 18/8 stainless steel, is super durable and lightweight , wide mouth

The gRAWnola Bar is made with organic seeds and nuts that are soaked (to remove the enzyme inhibitor), sprouted buckwheat (more alkaline), and then it is dehydrated at 115 degrees, and this keeps it a live food because the enzymes have not been killed off with high heat.  This is the best, properly prepared "live food" snack/meal that I have found.  $3.00 each. The  ingredients are: pumpkin seeds, apples, pecans, dates, almonds, walnuts, raisins, sprouted buckwheat, maple, agave, vanilla, oranges, cinnamon and  Celtic sea salt.  The only ingredients that are not organic are the almonds, pecans and walnuts.

Synergy's Core Greens, an alkalizing, live food, convenient, fast food that not only builds our red blood cells, but also  gives us 5-7 vegetable a day, plus our energy and               vitality. Synergy's ProArgi-9 Plus is a new formula which incorporates all the advanced formulations of l-arginine to counter hardening of the arteries confirmed in Stanford's Department of Cardiovascular Research, the  findings of the Nobel Laureates in Medicine in 1998, and endocrinologist,  Dr. Joe Prendergast clinical
practice for the last 17 years.

Maintaining Healthy Lifestyle after Catastrophe

If you have been a raw fooder for a length of time, you have probably experienced remarkable health benefits. You most likely are confident that a raw food diet would help you heal faster and more thoroughly, perhaps even save your life in the event of a serious accident or injury.

While western medicine is effective in the emergency treatment of physical trauma, many of us would agree, western medicine is less effective in long term healing. If you are unconscious or heavily sedated in a hospital, who is going to make sure you get the nutrition and care you need? The hospital staff would be, at least, ignorant at worst, hostile to alternative nutrition. Many of us lack the support of a life partner or family in the changes we have made in our diet and they may be unavailable to advocate for your dietary needs.

A group of us will be having a series of informal discussions on these issues, Our goal is to form a core of committed raw fooders to address these issues and to set up a system of support (for example arranging for meals, becoming a healthcare proxy, educating healthcare providers and family) for ourselves in the event of catastrophic injury.

Meetings will be held in East Cambridge. Call for location, date and time #6174922340
