    Pets - Query and History

    Raw Pets:

Info on raw pets, their diet, etc, any recommendations?

What are your thoughts on the spiritual, physical and emotional way we feed our pets?

Life-Cycle Studies: Pets - Worldwatch Institute Human domestication of animals probably began with dogs about 17,000 years ago, although some experts believe the association is much older. Dogs got an assured supply of food and shelter, and in return they offered ingrained tracking, hunting, and guarding skills. It's been argued that dogs selected humans, not the other way around, but one way or another a symbiotic relationship developed.

Other species were tamed later during the Neolithic period, which saw the spread of farming and the domestication of goats, sheep, pigs, and cows. Chickens have been kept creatures for at least 8,000 years. The cat was domesticated 9,500 years ago in Cyprus, when wild cats came in from the cold to eat the rodents infesting the grain stores of early farmers. It took a couple of millennia more before donkeys and horses were harnessed for transport. Some animals, despite apparent potential, can't be domesticated; the zebra is a notorious case of one that can't be drafted. But almost any creature can, and has been, kept as a pet, including rats, scorpions, and cockroaches. Low expectations widen the range of possibilities.

    RECIPE FOR THIS WEEK
    Fruit Kebobs with Raw Yogurt
    By Emily and Linda Wooliever

Well, my daughter pulled out one of her little cook books and looked at a recipe that appealed to her. The kids aren't eating dairy and the recipe called for yogurt. Determined Emily took out a bowl and put it on the table.

She found some fruit that was ripe to use and began washing and cutting it and putting it in the bowl. I was cleaning up my own mess (I made my famous chilli) and by the time I got to her she was all into it. Sam, my son, came by and he wanted to help so he cut a kiwi and added it to the bowl. Then they both cut up bananas. They kept talking about the fact that they don't have yogurt. I looked at the recipe and I said,

"Do you want me to make something that's like yogurt?" They said, "Sure!" So I pulled out my vitamix and made a raw yogurt. Here's the recipe:

    Fruit kebobs:
ripe fruit: plums, peaches, nectarines, kiwi, banana. (Or whatever you have on hand)

    Raw yogurt:
    1 cup raw cashews
1 cup frozen mangos (fresh would work too)
    1 tsp honey
    1 tiny squeeze of lemon
1 1/2 cups water (start with a cup and add more if necessary)

In the Vita-Mix, blend everything until smooth.
    Pour in a bowl.

Emily decorated the yogurt with more sliced bananas but wished she had strawberries. We skewered the fruit onto clean "stickebob toothpicks" as Emily called them. We all ate and enjoyed a very awesome snack and I thanked Emily for coming up with the good idea to make that today. She is very full of great ideas!

    Bee Update

    Kalamazoo Gazette

Article Excerpt - Complete article, click here

    Newhouse News Service
    Amy Ellis Nutt

An insecticide is suspected of causing a ``colony collapse'' disorder that has killed millions of honeybees worldwide and up to half of the 2.5 million colonies in the United States.

The chief suspect, say many scientists, is imidacloprid, the most commonly used insecticide on the planet.

Honeybees come into contact with pesticides because they are needed to pollinate scores of crops, including apples, cherries, blueberries and other crops in southwestern Michigan. The die-off has been a major concern for farmers and scientists, who have been looking into potential causes, from diseases and parasites to pesticides.

    Almond Update

    Living Tree community Foods

Excerpt from complete article (click here).

According to the mandatory order, organic almonds would be subjected to a high temperature process using moist heat for less than one minute. Now organic almonds are less than one tenth of one per cent of the total. The vast majority of almonds would be fumigated with propylene oxide. It is a substance very much like ether. A glance in the Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, revealed that it is a highly toxic flammable chemical compound. It was once used as a racing car fuel, but that, we are told was prohibited as the stuff was considered too dangerous. It is also used as a military explosive we were edified to learn.

We were further told that the United States Food & Drug Administration has approved its use to pasteurize raw almonds beginning on September 1, 2007. This is curious as it is classified as "possibly carcinogenic to humans" by the International Agency for Research on Cancer. One would imagine that this would be of concern to an agency ostensibly charged with safeguarding the nation's health. But then there are many things one could imagine. We learned further that propylene oxide belongs to the so- called "radiomimetic" genotoxic chemicals group, because it induces similar biological end-points as ionizing radiation.

The chemical's effects on food include gene mutation, DNA strand breaks, and neoplastic cell transformation. We suppose that this is the Almond Board's homage to better living through chemistry. We note that the propylene oxide treatment of foods is banned in the European Union, Canada, Mexico and most other countries. Let us also remember that almonds are consumed by children, adults, expectant and nursing mothers and elders.
