Letter from the President, Michael Deluise
"What is the best way for me to make a positive impact?" That's the most frequent question we get asked at the Melville Chamber of Commerce (second only to "How can the Chamber help get my company more business?). Actually this is the perfect time of the year for each and every one of us in the business community to make a most effective impact on our corporate and personal way of life. In fact, even if you do nothing at all you will be solidifying your future along with that of your family, employees and neighbors. In many ways the future is all up to you. On Tuesday, November 2, 2010, Long Islanders join citizens throughout America casting votes in support of those they feel can best serve as dedicated and effective elected officials. This once a year opportunity to control our future is often minimized by those who underestimate the value of their single vote. The right to vote is something we should appreciate and utilize as the important tool of democracy that it is. We owe it to ourselves to make ourselves smart before we fill in our ballot. Learn about the issues. Get to know the strengths and weaknesses of the candidates. Then schedule the brief amount of time to visit your local polling place on Election Day. At times our local issues seem to be overshadowed in the media by national and state issues yet our daily lives are often most impacted by the leaders we vote into local office. If our sewers, schools and traffic lights are not working we need elected officials who are familiar with our community and willing to put in the effort fix what's broken. At the Chamber we expect out elected officials to understand the needs of our families and businesses. We expect them to work tirelessly doing everything in their power to solve problems, support the goals of our community and help us grow and prosper. If they cannot do that then we will look for other leaders. And the same goes for those expecting to win our votes for state and federal office. Along with doing what is best for the nation and state they must do what's right for those who trust them by voting them into office. The Melville Chamber does not endorse any individual candidates. We suggest you learn as much as possible about each candidate. Do not overlook those running for local office. Whenever possible meet the candidates. Several times if possible. Ask questions. Then make your decisions picking those who you believe in your heart will do the best job throughout their terms of office. On November 2, 2010 you can make a difference by being an educated voter empowered to create the future you decide on.
Best regards,
Michael Deluise President Melville Chamber of Commerce
