Letter from the President, Michael Deluise

Monday, May 3, 2010 was a rainy day on Long Island but it would be impossible to match the sun shining over the Melville Route 110 Corridor as Canon Corporation executives and local dignitaries broke ground on the new Canon corporate headquarters. In the coming months 52 acres along the Long Island Expressway will be transformed into the new remarkable workplace for 2,000 full-time Long Island employees.

Throughout Long Island and New York State Canon is being welcomed with open arms not only because of the many people they will hire and the fine products they sell. There is more in Canon's arrival. Much more.

This new highly anticipated addition to the 110 Corridor has already begun to energize to our economic engine. Road crews are busy working to improve Walt Whitman Road and the surrounding roadways. Union professionals will soon be hard at work creating one of the most energy efficient corporate facilities in the nation. Long Island residents as well as businesses large and small can expect long-term benefits from the arrival of our new community minded corporate neighbor.

At the groundbreaking ceremony New York State Gov. David Paterson, Sen. Chuck Schumer, Congressman Steve Israel, Suffolk County Executive Steve Levy and Huntington Supervisor Frank Petrone each said they had listened to and responded to the needs of Canon and the neighborhood in helping to facilitate the Canon Corporation move to Melville.

Listening is good. Responding is also extremely important. The Canon project will succeed because our leaders listened and responded.

Your Melville Chamber of Commerce is proud of the role we play in listening and responding to the needs of those in our business community. We do it without fanfare. We do it on your behalf. And we sincerely want to hear from you about how we can help you.

When we receive a call, an e-mail, letter or suggestion we do everything within our power to help those requiring assistance to move ahead in a positive way. Whether a call comes from a member who serves as the CEO of a local bank, the director of a nonprofit organization, the manager of a neighborhood restaurant or someone looking to bring a new business into the Melville area your Chamber of Commerce promises to dedicate all the resources we have to help build the strongest possible business environment for success.

With hundreds of extremely diversified companies of all sizes doing business along the 110 Corridor it would be impossible to offer one set of simple cookie-cutter solutions to cover such the wide variety of challenges our members meet. At the chamber we try to meet the needs of our local businesses in many ways. We offer regularly scheduled events and programs. These popular and well attended programs as well as some very exciting special events are presented throughout the year at the times and dates many of our members feel is most convenient.

We also realize the nature of your company and the unique aspects of your business might require solutions outside of the normal offerings we provide. You might on occasion need support in helping a local, state and federal officials hear your requests. It just may be you are in search of a specific company or individual who could be the answer to your continued future success.

Nothing pleases us more than to help you open doors through suggestions and introductions we provide. And don't forget that once the introductions are made your chamber is here to help you follow through.

So whether you are new to the neighborhood like Canon, a long time member of the Melville business community or looking to bring your business here please call on your Chamber of Commerce whenever you need assistance. We are only a phone call or e-mail away @ (631) 777-6260 or info@melvillechamber.org
