Do you remember when you were in grade school and the excitement you felt on Valentines Day?  Opening the Valentines that your friends - and possibly a secret admirer - put into the lunch bag that you so carefully decorated in class.  Just because we are a little older, a little taller, and a lot wiser does not mean you cannot still create that excitement for others.  Send your neighbor, your loved one, your friends special Valentines.  Residents at Riverside and Belfair Gardens love to receive letters, cards and packages.  We are blessed to have so many families that live locally and are very involved with their loved ones but remember that excitement from grade school - what a great feeling to share!

The Food Committee met in January.  After spending several hours reviewing every meal for everyday in the new five week menu cycle, we have developed a menu that the Committee Members are pleased with and were excited to implement.

One thing we can always change is our mind!  Knowing how difficult it can be for a resident to order a week ahead of time, we have changed to a daily, restaurant style service.  In addition to the main menu choice, we also have several alternate choices. Residents also continue to receive the weekly menu until they are completely comfortable with the new process.  It took us all a couple of days to get adjusted to the new style but by the end of the first week, I was already receiving positive feedback from Residents and family members.

In February, the Belfair Gardens team will start to implement a similar program.

I think one of the most beneficial changes is the display of the lunch and dinner meal on the buffet just outside the dining room.  At Belfair Gardens we will be adding pictures of meals and alternates so that residents can visually see what they may want to choose.  I am not a Chef but I do know that we eat with our eyes first!

Notes From Belfair Gardens

We are so thankful to all of our family members who volunteer their time and talents with the Residents and staff at Belfair Gardens.  If you play an instrument, crochet, tell a good story, or make great chocolate chip cookies - share these talents and irresistible things with your loved ones and their neighbors.  We all have talents and I know where you can find an appreciative audience! Watching you do something that you are good at, may be a priceless gift to someone.

It is important that you surround your loved ones with pictures that reflect their life adventures.  Avoid using pictures from the recent past as they may not recognize themselves.  The one exception to this would be the pictures of the grandkids - everyone loves pictures of babies and kids.  Include their childhood pictures their parents and siblings, early adulthood, wedding photos.  I suggest you keep the original photo and have a copy made.  A person with Alzheimer's tends to share things, or forget which things are his. Then - share their world.  Write the story of the photo and identify anyone you can.  Now anyone who enters their room or sees the picture can give them their history back and get to know them better.

Notes From Riverside

It's a good thing this a leap year, with Valentine's Day, Presidents Day, and Mardi Gras all falling in February our residents are going to need the extra day this month to fit in all the celebrating. We have a month of chocolate planned that will satisfy even the sweetest of sweet tooth's as we explore everything from the history of Chocolate to making our own! Of course everyone is looking forward to our annual Mardi Gras celebration, with plenty of beads, king cake and games.

We are also very excited to kick off a new club this month, the Heritage Club. Each month we will ask a resident to share their heritage with us. The series will kick off this month with Anne Arcamone, who although we all know her for her wonderful Italian heritage and cooking, will be sharing the Spanish side of her heritage. It is sure to be a fascinating presentation as she plans to share her personal links to Royalty with us.

Residents will also enjoy playing Bunko with the Sun City Red Hat Group, and Irish Singing show by the Raparees, a Valentine's day visit from the kids at Amazing Creations, Health Seminars, and of course a Leap Year party to ensure we make good use of our extra day this year.

I hope to see you all this month out having fun with us! -Savannah
