Founders' Day 2008
The registration deadline is near!
 Bishop Mark Holmerud
Newly-elected
Sierra Pacific Bishop Mark Holmerud will speak on the topic: "Beyond Bureacracies and Ivory Towers:

Another Year of Grace at PLTS
 
The 2008-09 Academic Year has begun!
 
During new student orientation, August 27-29, we welcomed 26 new students to PLTS for this 2008-09 academic year.  23 are Master of Divinity students, and the other three are 1 each in our Master of Christian Ministry program, our Master of Theological Studies program, and our Certificate of Advanced Theological Studies program.  At our opening worship on September 3, we welcomed back our returning students.  We have 108 students in our residential programs and in our Theological Education for Emerging Ministries program (TEEM).
 
Luther Lecture 2008 
Strohl pictureDr. Jane Strohl To Be Honored
 
This year's Luther Lecture, October 29, will feature the Rev. Dr. Jane Strohl.  She will present the lecture entitled, "For God Leads Down to Hell and Brings Back": Theodicy and the Word of Comfort in Luther's Theology, she will preach at worship, and she will be installed in the First Lutheran, Los Angeles/Southwest California Synod Chair in Reformation Theology and History. The event will also include some special events and activities for alums.  They include a faculty reception for Dr. Strohl and worship on Tuesday, October 28, and a social gathering and dinner to honor Dr. Strohl, and vespers on Wednesday.  
 
We have also made arrangements for folks to stay at the Berkeley La Quinta Inn (please make your own reservation at 510-849-1121, ask for PLTS Group Rate) at $79 per night plus tax, which includes breakfast (usual rate is $149!). 
 
Wednesday lunch is $10; dinner is $20, payable at the door.  Please register for these meals with Chris Evans (510-559-2737 or [email protected]).

Dr. Martha Stortz Cimbs Mt. Kilimanjaro!
Why did she do it, you may ask!  Here are her own words:
 
"When a good friend invited me to join his trekking party, I floated the idea with some friends. It both captured their imagination-and exposed their fears. What about altitude? What about cold? What about knees? Hips? Back? Those were their fears. Mine was something else: if I don't do this now, I'm afraid I'll never got another chance. My eighty-three-year-old mother offered the benediction: "What are you waiting for?""

Ordinations and New Calls
 
Lara Janssen, MDiv, 2008, will be ordained on October 19 in South Dakota.  She will serve at Lutheran Church of the Cross, Rialto, CA.
 
Diane Terrazas, TEEM, 2008 was ordained on August 10 at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Miles, TX and will serve there as pastor.
 
Jan Castleberry, TEEM, 2008, was ordained on August 9 and was installed August 10 at Hope Lutheran Church in Comanche, TX.
