Readers,

AssangeThe Internet is not free. And freedom of speech comes at a price.

For Wikileaks, the price is its Australian Editor-in-chief, Julian Assange. His recent arrest for "sex crimes" in Sweden reminds us that our voice is limited, no matter how free we're raised to believe we are. Amazon closed Wikileaks' servers. MasterCard and Visa blocked services. Even Paypal is prohibiting donations.

Raindance and the London independent film community support Wikileaks' goal of international peace and government transparency. Some of us have tried to help: filmmaker Ken Loach and documentary maker John Pilger, along with others, offered bail money in the Westminster Magistrates' Court after Assange's arrest. These offers were denied.

As filmmakers, we have an inherent duty to protect our rights to write what we want, to film what we want, and to share what we want. It's a different world, one in which we have the resources to do all three, and we cannot let the bureaucratic Man stifle it.

This is more than just a battle for Assange and Wikileaks. More than just a fight for the Internet. This is a war for our Voice. And we cannot lose.

Broadcast Oppurtunity in Spain
TV Costas are looking for film content to broadcast in 2011.  TV Costas is a new channel and will broadcast to the English ex-pat community living in southern Spain.  The Channel is looking to supplement the schedule with third-party film content.  If you have either drama or documentary films that you would like to submit, TV Costas would be delighted to hear from you.

TV Costas cannot pay you for the use of your content, though it can guarantee you an audience - if your material is deemed appropriate for its English speaking viewers.

TV Costas would of course provide you with a letter of agreement stating the terms of use, including the reassurance that the material will not be edited or altered, and would not be used in any way that would bring you or your programme into disrepute.

If you have any recent or past films that you would like to reach a wider audience and be given an airing, please email Caroline for more information:  caroline@carolinewebster.co.uk

The TV Costas website goes live on Friday December 10th and can be found at www.tvcostas.com

"What does censorship reveal? It reveals fear.

Courage is contagious. Sources are encouraged by the opportunities they see in front of them.

It is impossible to correct abuses unless we know that they're going on.

Which country is suffering from too much freedom of speech? Name it, is there one?"

Or, what we can learn from Wikileaks

The first war of the web is under way and Wikileaks, lead by the enigmatic Julian Assange, is challenging the world's only superpower.

That is a powerful achievement, and there is a lot to be learned from the way Wikileaks and Julian Assange handle themselves.

For us filmmakers, there are lessons to be learned here, if we look for them. Find out more...
