Greetings!
I bid you welcome to this weeks newsletter.
I've been interning at Raindance for 3 months now and as such have found the contents of my wallet somewhat diminished. I would imagine, being penniless filmmakers, that you can sympathise.
So this week we've put together a relief package to aid the impoverished filmmaker.
As Raindance's resident editor I'm always trying to get hold of the latest and greatest software. But I also like to eat and have a roof over my head. Luckily just about every £500 software package has a freebie equivalent, some just as good if not better. So I put together the Zero Budget Software Guide. All free, all legal.
And coming up September 18/19th we have Lo-to-No Budget Filmmaking. Films like Clerks, Pi, The Blair Witch Project and El Mariachi were made using the principles and tricks you will learn on this course.
No money? No budget? No excuse! Grab a camera and get filming!

Zero budget software guide
|
| Like he says, "all free, all legal"
It's tough making a living out there; especially as a freelance or independent filmmakers. So when it comes to buying software it feels a bit galling to shell out £500 for a disc and a code. Well, now you don't have to. Thanks to a lot of lovely, hard-working, generous people, there are free alternatives to every piece of filmmaking software you can think of. And thanks to Christian, you can find them here. |

Alternative Film Finance
|
|
This MailOnLine article describes the risks and potential rewards of investing in film. In doing so it also highlights the rationale behind the creation of the Ultimate Media Fund (UMF). The Ultimate Media Fund is designed to take advantage of the whole media value chain as opposed to an investment into one film. Film slates, development, distribution and sales arms have been gathered under UMF, and may represent the best value investment in media and movies in years. In 1913 'The Moving Picture World' tackles censorship:
|
"It is alleged that the stories told by some motion pictures tend to lead to the commission of crimes. Grant, for the sake of argument, that this is true and then apply it to the public press. Take an issue of the New York World of the past week and read how robbers attacked a woman in her home. Note the details of the crime given in the article; how the robbers approached the victim; the materials used to gag, bind and blindfold her, and the manner in which they were applied. It is extremely doubtful that the authorities can point to a motion picture now on the market that is more faithful to the details of a criminal operation than was given in the article referred to."

7 Reasons Why Monomyth Works
|
| ...and you should use it
Joseph Campbell's seminal work The Hero With a Thousand Faces described the pattern every heroic story follows. But it took Christopher Vogler to bring that pattern to the cinema, and his class to bring it to writers around the world. From The Lion King to The Matrix, this pattern underlies almost every hit film. Find out just how fundamental the monomyth is to to storytelling in film and check out Vogler's class, The Writer's Journey |
