Greetings!

Jamie Kataky
Hello everyone, my name is Jamie and I am one of the new interns here at Raindance.. I have just graduated from a degree in Philosophy and with no real experience, am now trying to start a career in film. Raindance has taken me in and is giving me the perfect transition from student life to real life.

Inspired by the words of Col Spector on his recent Documentary Foundation Certificate course here at Raindance, my next move will hopefully be to go off with a camera and traverse the Himalayas in India shooting my first non-fiction... wish me luck!

My main duty so far has been to help the team organising all the entries for this year's festival. I've had a sneak peak at the films and am really excited by the quality and variety of films on offer. I have also written the article on DSLR filmmaking.

Look forward to running into some of you at the festival!

Technology moves ever on and the democratisation of filmmaking continues. Digital SLR cameras, traditionally used for still photography are now increasingly capable of capturing video.

The quality is high enough that they've been used on professional shoots all over the world, shorts, commercials and features. Best thing is: they're relatively cheap.

Check out the 5 Things You Should Know About DSLR Filmmaking.

Lessons from 1913

Some more advice to 'photoplay' writers from 'Moving Picture World' magazine, 1913:

"The secret of inspiration is work - and then more work. Ruskin has told of how he studied the lives of the world's greatest artists in order to learn, if he might, the fundamental elements of their success. By one thing only was he impressed: the immense
amount of work that each one produced. Among them all there was not one who waited for inspiration to come before he took up his brush. Each one possessed the capacity for hard and unremitting toil; and out of this toil were born the masterpieces upon which their fame rests today."

Mega Piranha

Event cinema is back and the modern B-movie may be leading the charge. Take Mega Piranha for example. Yes it's technically awful, but it's fun, and maybe that's something we miss. Check out this defence of Mega Piranha.

Turn the present economy to your advantage

The recession is, (I believe it is generally agreed) a bad thing. It leads to public spending cuts, and less ice-cream which is clearly not great.

For the canny independent filmmaker however, it is a chance to thrive. All those lessons learned from working on no-budget films suddenly become extremely marketable.

Find out the 5 ways to thrive in the recession
