Greetings!

Alan NibloMy name is Patrick Tucker and I teach Hands On Directing For Film and TV at Raindance

Most people in the film industry have started out on the bottom rungs, working as runners or assistants, working their way up the ladder.

The language of film becomes natural to them, and they use it without thinking.

I came into screen directing straight from 10 years as a theatre director (via the BBC Training programme, who finally accepted me onto the scheme after turning me down for eleven years straight).

I did not know this film language, and it was as if I were in a strange land, not knowing the local lingo, and it took me quite some time before the crew stopped raising their eyebrows when I did not understand a particular bit of their jargon.

Here is a collection of the most usual film directing terms - and if you feel I have left any important ones out, please let me know.

I look forward to hearing from you.

H i Film Makers.

I would like to thank Raindance for their work helping filmmakers on the business and net working. Thanks for the updates me and I have been receiving these mails since my training with Raindance in 2008. This also motivated me to dig more into the film business.

I am a Film Student with Newport International Film School and doing my final Project in MA Film. We are allowed to involve other interested people into the project. I write to ask if you might be of help in publicizing my request in your site.

I will be glad if there are any Raindance members interested in getting involved in the Student films project. If successful this goes to festivals.

If any one is interested and would like to participate I will be glad to have further discussions. The scheduled time is end of August 2010 and to be shot in Wales. I am looking for assistance with camera person or DoP, Art and Design, and editing and Sound. This is a ten minute script with four characters and a dog. Screenplay Competiton from Japan

Raindance has teamed up with Sega-Sammy Holdings, the Japanese Games company is branching out into animated feature film production with the launch of a new subsidiary company, MARZA.

Marza will produce English language, feature length 3D animated films. The films will not be like "Japanese Anime"  as they are for global markets.

As part of the strategy of the new Story Development section within the company , Marza is launching a story competition for writers. The initial rewards for the winners consist of small cash prizes in the form of Option agreements on the material, but the long-term rewards for writers are very promising, as between 5 and 8 of the winning stories will be put into development and depending on the experience of the writer, they will then be put under contract to work on the screenplay.

This is a global search, and Marza is open to new voices, new visions, and multi-cultural stories. The films are intended for children and families, so certain restrictions apply.

The competition will be jointly run with Tokyo -based, UK owned production company, 100 Meter Films.

A few words on Writing Comedy

"If you want to tell people the truth, make them laugh. Otherwise they'll kill you."

"Happiness is a choice that requires effort at times."
- Aeschylus

"Everything human is pathetic. The secret source of humour itself is not joy but sorrow." - Mark Twain

"We should consider every day lost on which we have not danced at least once. And we should call every truth false, which was not accompanied by at least one laugh."
- Friedrich Neitzsche, party animal it would seem.

"Don't tell jokes only the band laughs at."
- Milton Berle

And one on writing in general:

"If a story doesn't give you a hard-on in the first couple of scenes, throw it in the goddamned garbage."
