Greetings!

Martin GoochMy name is Martin Gooch. I am a filmmaker. I teach The Short Film Project at Raindance.

I'm on my way to my brothers wedding in GErmany. The airport is full of stunned Spaniards after their countries spanking by Switzerland last night in the World Cup.

Although I may still appear to be in my very, very late twenties, I was actually born in 1872 due to an unexpected flux in the space time continuum.

I went to the USA to be an archaeologist, even though I didn't know anything about archaeology. Not knowing about things has never really been a set back for me. After a film and art degree, I started work in the VFX department on Judge Dredd.

Since then I have worked on more than 200 productions from Harry Potter to East Enders and Robot Wars to Big Brother. I have filmed all over the world, from Sahara to swampland to Shepherd's Bush.
I still haven't got a proper job.

Nuff said.

I've made over 20 short films, a couple of which where even good enough to screen at Raindance!  Then I sold a feature film script.

I'm delighted to be part of the Raindance Team, and am going to be giving a couple Raindance workshops at Lattitude Festival July 16 -18. If you are going and want to get a seat, look here.

Hope to see you around at Raindance.

What's up at Raindance Budapest

Budapest

After the summer Raindance will launch its first courses in Budapest.  Let all your Hungarian buddies know about it...... budapest.raindance.org
Summer is finally here!  One thing that always happens in Hungary in the summer: people shoot movies.  Student films, local films, and international blockbusters.  Currently The Borgias (Showtime/CTV), Monte Carlo (Fox), and The Rite (Warner Bros.) are filming at new studios and using locations in and around Budapest.

The other great thing about Hungary in the summer: festivals festivals festivals.   There are almost too many music festivals to mention, where you can find everything from the metal-death rock to spaced-out drug techno and lots of good stuff in between.  The biggest by far is Sziget (link: http://www.sziget.hu/festival_english), on an island in the middle of Budapest, one of the biggest music fests in Europe. This year Madness, The Specials, Faithless, The Young Punx, Iron Maiden, Casabian, Muse, and many others will appear.

Simon Channing Williams 1945 - 2009

There is a memorial service for Simon, who passed away last year,  next week in London.
He is greatly missed.

He began his career at the BBC and then went on to work alongside Mike Leigh as his producer for 20 years.  He produced many critically acclaimed films including Oscar nominated Vera Drake (2004) and Palm D'Or winner Secrets and Lies (1996).

He formed his own production company called Potboiler Productions which had some great success with the Oscar winning The Constant Gardener (2005).

Simon was a great champion of Raindance. Elliot Grove had the pleasure and honour of interviewing him at BAFTA. You can listen to this interview here.

Think Super-8 has had it's day?

JJ Abrams and Steven Spielberg released the trailer for their new film. It's name? 'Super 8'.
it's sure to raise interest in the super8mm format again. Watch the Super 8 trailer

Things to know about Super 8:

1) In 2005 Britain's Ben Crowe was nominated for the Short Film Palme D'Or at Cannes with 'The Man Who Met Himself'....shot on Super 8.

2) The famous School of Cinematic Arts in Southern California required students to film on Super 8 to gain the basics of film production and editing.

3) Derek Jarman, Sam Raimi, Kevin Smith, Harmony Korine and Guy Maddin have all made extensive use of Super 8 film, and Oliver Stone has used it in such films as The Doors and Natural Born Killers.

4) Allowing the exposure of single frames and non standard frame rates Super 8 is perfect for low-budget animation.

Get on the band-wagon before the Abrams/Spielberg collaboration hits the big screen.
