Greetings!

James BurbidgeBienvenue!

I thought I'd give you a rest from the intern intros and do my job for once by welcoming you myself. So, welcome.

For the last week the office has comprised Frederica, myself and few industrious interns, with everyone else in Cannes. It was very peaceful but short-lived; already Elliot and Suzanne are back, talking of parties, screenings and well lubricated business meetings. The rest filter in over the weekend and will no doubt have more stories to tell.

Anyhow, hope you enjoy this weeks newsletter, feedback is always appreciated - jamesburbidge@raindance.co.uk

break into the industry

Epiphany #1: Nobody hires a "filmmaker!"

I won't even let my daughter date a filmmaker. Everyone knows a filmmaker is a person who spent his or her money on a short and is looking for a job.

You've learned how to block a scene, move a dolly, mix a soundtrack, cut a negative, watch Hitchcock and critique Spielberg - but you don't know how to make money and you've got rent to pay.

Find out how to make some actual money whilst you break into the industry.
A couple of courses
Maverick Screenwriting
First Feature

What do films like RESERVOIR DOGS, MEMENTO, DONNIE DARKO, and BRICK have in common?  They were all made by new filmmakers, without stars and for low budgets.  In spite of that, these films succeeded because of the brilliance of their conceits, as well as the originality of their storytelling.

This course is about 'Maverick Screenwriting' - stories that dare to think outside the box.  For those who want to move beyond 3-Act structure - who see the world in a different way - who want to give their imaginations free rein, or who are just plain tired of naturalism - Maverick Screenwriting is for you.

Cannes 2010

Well,

Elliot and Suzanne are back from Cannes and a little worse for wear. The others will be trickling back in between now and next week.

Apparently all went well, Elliot says it's the most effective business trip version of Cannes he's ever done. I think he just went to a lot of parties and calling that 'business' is still quite unfair.

Raindance member Geoff Searle popped in a minute ago. He had a small part in Robin Hood, or Robin Les Bois as it's known in France. He managed to slip into the huge after party by sneaking around and getting in the porters door with a wealthy family returning from a days shopping.

Things We Like
The greatest writers will never be able to match the utter insanity that is everyday life.  It's amazing what some people say when they think no one is listening, as Overheard In New York proves.

Renounced
Megan Fox will not be appearing in Transformers 3. Also, Transformers 3 will exist.

10 Films - 1 Room
Cube

Locations are a sure-fire way to drive up the cost of your feature, both in terms of money and time.

These 10 films got around that by simply setting the film in one location. From the master himself to low budget indie, 1 room setting not only cheap but a great creative challenge.

Competition

London Recut is a pioneering new competition from BFI, Film London, the London Screen Archives Network and Mosaic Films.                                                                                           Deadline - 6th June.

Through the project, never-before-available moving image archive material has been released for anyone who's ever had a relationship with London to explore and recut - to tell their own stories of their own London.

We want to know if London is your home, or just the place where you live? If London's history is yours, or someone else's? Your core storytelling abilities will speak volumes: The E-Seq cutting tools used on the site are targeted at non-filmmakers - they're simple, basic and straightforward.

Winners will have their films screened at venues throughout London and premiered at Rushes Soho Shorts film festival. You can also win a brand new Flip camera.

Fantastic material: The material on offer ranges from early twentieth century silents right through to 1970's colour, taking in both London's iconic landmarks as well as its lesser known gems. You can add your own narration and text, as well as choose from over 60 licensed pieces of music.
