Raindance Film Festival Newsletter 14.01.10

Raindance Logo Greetings!

Welcome to the new look Raindance Newsletter - kindly worded feedback is appreciated.

We've had a successful week so far, over 200 people braved the snow and came out for our Open House and 99 Minute Film School events.

In other news there are two broken arms in the office and a cold going round. So that's not so good.

Hope you are all hale and hearty.

Raindance News
New intern Tallon Moss rants

Beach
Imagine sitting down at the beach on a 40 degree day...Your shoes are off, toes wedged in the white sand that stretches for miles along the coast.  You look left, the right, noticing that your closest neighbours are merely specks in the distance.

Imagine now that you are 9000 miles away from this place, braving freezing winds, tackling masses of crowds on the subway and not seeing the sun for what feels like days.

Interning at Raindance involves a lot of (un) glamorous work that simply needs to be done!  Stuffing envelopes, posting mail, updating twitter accounts... But I'm loving it a whole lot, and wouldn't trade places with any bronzed Australian right now for anything.
Website of the Week

Who doesn't love the Coen brothers? Who doesn't think Shakespeare was one of the greatest writers of all time?
Who doesn't think it's a great idea to combine the two?

It was on that premise that Adam Bertocci wrote Two Gentlemen of Lebowski a clash of culture and language hitherto unseen - and remarkably funny too.

Film of the Week
Three Miles North of Molkom

3 Miles North of Molkom
Hidden deep in the lakeside forests of Sweden, lies Angsbacka; a 21st Century playground for adults. Once a year, their gates open to a thousand international participants, placed in 'Sharing Groups' at random.

Three Miles North of Molkom, BIFA nominated, and 4* reviewed, is released on DVD on the 25th of January.
Corrections

Last week we published a list of 10 Firsts in Film. Our course director/office geek was not happy with some of the so-called 'facts' and has marked the paper. He gave it 6.5 out of 10.

Review: Creation (DVD)

Creation
Raindance reviewer Jules Garnett looks at the Darwin film Creation, out on DVD.

"You killed God, sir", proclaims Huxley triumphantly. With the benefit of hindsight, I wish he wouldn't. With the benefit of forethought... Read on

Quoted
From famed word mangler Samuel Goldwyn

'Go see it and see for yourself why you shouldn't go see it.'

'Here I am paying big money to you writers, and what for? All you do is change the words.'

'Don't pay any attention to the critics - don't even ignore them.'

Film Dictionary: Alan Smithee

A pseudonym once used by the Directors Guild of America who wanted their credit removed from the film. To use this name the director had to prove to the guild that the film had been taken from their creative control. They also had to keep the reason for their disavowal secret. It has fallen out of use after the 1997 film An Alan Smithee Film: Burn, Hollywood, Burn from which the director asked to have his name removed.
We hope you all enjoyed the snow and frolicked duly in it.

Have a good weekend

Sincerely,
