Something About Raindance
Theresa Norton

ContrailI've been an intern at Raindance for about two months now and have become fairly accustomed to the office. Our office is small and packed and over brimming with people sharing desks and trying to find a place to work. However, after the festival the office became less crowded. Chairs were vacated and because of lack of body heat, people are now bringing their scarves and gloves to wear at their desks. Even more so, it became significantly quieter since Elliot and Suzanne dashed over to Toronto to teach and Xavier left for New Zealand. We hope they enjoy their time abroad.
Directing Performance

Working with professional actors can be scary for first time filmmakers, especially within the tight confines of a shooting schedule. In this course, Chris Thomas will demonstrate how to get the best out of your actors, from auditions to the final take.

On the Saturday you'll cover rehearsal techniques and preparation with actors, then on Sunday the focus will be on working with the actors to fine-tune the script and performances.

This course is perfect for directors looking to get a fresh look at how to work with actors

If music is what you're after...
RaindanceTV
You're in luck this week. Several new music videos make a debut this week, including the funky Manda Rin tune 'Guilty Pleasure', The Puppini Sisters' seductive 'Jilted', and many more. Despite the range of different genres, all the films have one thing in common - Alex de Campi. He directed all the newly featured music videos; his artistic eye for film is evident.

Enjoy all the options!

George Bernard Shaw

Wednesday night we had James Bartlett's 'Jumping the First Hurdle', telling you how to get your script past readers. Here's George Bernard Shaw's advice:

"Go on writing plays, my boy, One of these days one of these London producers will go into his office and say to his secretary, "Is there a play from Shaw this morning?" and when she says, "No," he will say, "Well, then we'll have to start on the rubbish." And that's your chance, my boy."

This coming monday is Boozin' & Smoozin' where you can meet old course-mates, people you met at the festival, or just others with an interest in film. Shaw knew all about the importance of discussing your ideas with others too:

"If you have an apple and I have an apple and we exchange these apples then you and I will still each have one apple. But if you have an idea and I have an idea and we exchange these ideas, then each of us will have two ideas."

So on the back of those two quotes, here's some more from Shaw which I find relevant to getting your work out there:

"You use a glass mirror to see your face; you use works of art to see your soul"

"Take care to get what you like or you will be forced to like what you get"

"A life spent making mistakes is not only more honorable, but more useful than a life spent doing nothing"

"I often quote myself. It adds spice to my conversation"
Piracy and the future of the film industry

PiracyChances are, you know someone who has downloaded a film or two. Internet Piracy is causing a massive headache for the studios, but independent film sees the peer2peer networking software used by it as an excellent distribution tool.

What, then, is the future of the industry?
Intern James Burbidge explores these topics in his article Piracy and the Future of the Film Industry

Police Ban Independent Film

British independent film director Penny Woolcock has had her latest film, '1 Day' pulled from cinemas in the Birmingham area, apparently under the advice of the police. This has raised a furore amongst the independent filmmaking community who point out that it raises issues about the validity of the BBFC when the police can apparently overturn its decisions. '1 Day' is about gang culture in Birmingham and was filmed using local residents; it was given a 15 certificate. Police are claiming that no co-ordinated action has been undertaken and are investigating the matter. The Independent has written this article on the issue

Amnesia - Clue

If you're looking for a beautifully shot and artistic film then look away now. This is a hugely fun movie adaptation of the board game Cluedo which shouldn't work, but somehow does.

It struggled at the box office but turned into a cult classic, partly because of the popularity of the game and partly due to the three different endings which were randomly shipped to cinemas. Stars included Tim Curry (10 years after The Rocky Horror Show), Madeline Kahn (Blazing Saddles) and Christopher Lloyd (Back to the Future).

In February this year Universal announced that Gore Verbinski is attatched to develop a remake of Clue which is rumored to be set for release 2011, so keep your eyes open!
