Chic Desires We all want to be beautiful in our own way. One way people try to
obtain this beauty is through the clothes they wear. Another method is
to imitate the glamorous movie stars dancing across the silver screen.
So doesn't it seem natural that we often crave the fashions worn by our
favorite stars?
High fashion and "it" trends have always been a dominant concern in
society throughout all civilizations. For centuries, people have molded
and re-formed their natural body to fit the popular image of the time.
Fashion, whether it be the haute couture designs or the affordable
trendy styles, has been directly influenced by the trend-setting film
industry.

POP QUIZ Which hurts more: hitting your elbow on a door frame or
getting blasted by a laser?
The obvious answer is the laser blast, but
it isn't the correct answer. If I were to show you a film clip where a
man hit his elbow on a door frame, you'd go "ouch". You'd understand
the pain and empathize with the man. But if I showed you a "Star Trek"
clip where a laser dissolves a man, it wouldn't effect you. You've
never been hit by a laser blast, you have no idea what it feels like.

5 More Films You Might Not Have Heard About
We are really excited about our lineup at this year's festival. Brand new films, hot new talent - all waiting to be discovered!
CARMO - HIT THE ROAD A Spanish smuggler driving through Brazil is assaulted and has his load stolen.
HUMPDAY It's been a decade since Ben (Duplass) and Andrew (Leonard) were the bad boys of their college campus. Ben has settled down and found a job, wife, and home. Andrew took the alternate route as a vagabond artist, skipping the globe from Chiapas to Cambodia. When Andrew shows up unannounced on Ben's doorstep, they easily fall back into their old dynamic of macho one-upmanship.
THE GIRLFRIEND EXPERIENCE The highly anticipated new feature from Stephen Soderbergh (Che, Ocean's Eleven), returning to the style of his breakout hit sex, lies and videotape, with adult film actress Sasha Grey stepping sexily into the lead role.
MODERN LOVE IS AUTOMATIC A new motion picture about an apathetic nurse who moonlights as a dominatrix, her aspiring model roommate and the sad, strange world they live in.
STUCK Steve Balderson's homage to film noir women-in-prison films. Faithfully re-producing the genre with a modern, tongue-in-cheek twist, expect all the hallmarks of a classic prison movie complete with a wrongly accused heroine, hard boiled dames, diabolical alliances, forbidden love, cat-fighting cuties, a sadistic warden, and corrupt prison guards.

Quoted: On Directing - Take Your Pick: "Of all the things I've done in life, directing a motion picture is the most beautiful. It's the most exciting and the nearest that an interpretive craftsman, such as an actor can possibly get to being a creator." Laurence Olivier
"The directing of a picture involves coming out of your individual loneliness and taking a controlling part in putting together a small world. A picture is made. You put a frame around it and move on. And one day you die. That is all there is to it." John Huston
"Being a doctor has taught me a lot about directing. You're doing the same thing: You're reconstructing the manifold of behavior to the point where an audience says, yes, that's exactly like people I know." Jonathan Miller
"Movie directing is a perfect refuge for the mediocre." Orson Welles

Renounced
If it is easy for filmmakers to turn a decent novel into a rubbish film (see last week's newsletter), it must be easy to turn a rubbish film into a decent novel, right?
Not so, it would appear. In the crazy world of official novelisations and official prequel novelisations, the books are often worse than mediocre films which spawn them. Read the rest...
