Greetings!
Festival Mayhem has hit our basement office. Affectionately called the U-boat. Opening Night is in 5 weeks. We announce our lineup on September 1st. 3 days later, a week tomorrow in fact. The highly regarded District 9 opens in the UK. Watch the trailer and read John Truby's District 9 Breakdown. It's clear, concise and extremely helpful for the inner screenwriter in you. While you wait with baited breath for announcements we have lots of
upcoming events and courses to warm your film-loving hearts.
It's a new term at Raindance, so we're starting with the 99 Minute Film School on the 3rd September
for a mere £10 (FREE if you're a premium member.)
Then we launch out Foundation Certificates before the festival takes over our lives. Listen to our man, Elliot Grove in a podcast Read a review of The Damned United

How man y times should a film director read a script? How often should you read your script? 9 times, as the books recommend?
Actually, most of us just read the script ONCE.
It's not how many times you read a screenplay, it's how. Read Patrick Tuckers Film Director's Check List Number 2

Stop Blaming Yourself Most writers have no idea that they're using blunt, simplistic story tools that make it impossible for them to write a great script. They follow the old 3-act structure rules found in all the screenwriting books and when the script fails they think it's their fault. Stop blaming yourself. Those techniques will never work. Why? Because they're not professional. In just three weeks, Raindance is giving you the opportunity to learn the most powerful tool for professional storytelling anywhere in the world, John Truby's 22 Steps of Every Great Script.

Quoted
"You must knock on doors until your knuckles bleed. Doors will slam in your face. You must pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and knock again. It's the only way to achieve your goals in life." --Michael Uslan - Producer (Batman,Batman Returns, Batman Forever, Batman and Robin, Batman Begins) - who we wish had knocked a little quieter when trying to get Batman and Robin made.
"I work in a business where almost everyone is waiting for the next big thing. Sometimes it comes, and sometimes it doesn't. But it doesn't matter that your dream came true if you spent your whole life sleeping. So get out there and go for it, but don't be caught waiting. It's great to plan for your future. Just don't live there, because really nothing ever happens in the future. Whatever happens happens now, so live your life where the action is - now." --Jerry Zucker - Producer (Naked Gun, My Best Friends Wedding) - sounds like he should do Raindance courses!
"I discovered early in my movie work that a movie is never better than the stupidest man connected with it. There are times when this distinction may be given to the writer or director. Most often it belongs to the producer." --Ben Hecht - Screenwriter (His Girl Friday, Notorious) - has he read our producer joke? Hot Air Balloon?

Stuff We Really Like... Halo8.tv It's the independent film studio funded by Matt Pizzolo, award wining director of "Thread", released in 2005 and produced by a team of young filmmakers in their early twenties. After he dropped NYU he funded Kings Mob Production. Nowadays he is busy working on the "iconoclastic and music driven cult movies and their related soundtracks". Truly indie, fresh and smart.
Karl Bartos Again talking about Karl Bartos, I think it's amazing to watch one of the pioneers of electronic music become a one man band, being responsible for the audio and video of his performances - and looking ahead in the future.
One This one needs no words...
Tulseluper Peter Greenaway and his particular crazy world, telling the story of the troubled writer Tulse Henry Purcell Looper in 92 suitcases found around the world. Later Greenaway transformed this project in his first live VJ performance performed around the world since 2005. Amazing.

Call for Home Movies! The Rio, Hackney's last remaining cinema, is celebrating its 100th anniversary with an ambitious new community project that will make archive film more accessible to local audiences. As part of the project, the Rio is especially interested in any home movies local residents may have hidden away. These films are a rich source of memories, and key to unlocking and accessing our pasts.
In November the Rio will be hosting a special 'Home Movie' screening day, where residents will have the opportunity to bring along their film reels and view them on screen. Furthermore, the Rio is able to digitise a selection of the material submitted - so it can be played and enjoyed again and again at home on DVD.
If you have any old film footage at home, or would just like to know more about the project, please contact Jemma at the Rio - jemma@riocinema.org.uk tel 020 7241 9419.
