Issue Brief: Trapping/Hunting/Fishing/Conservation - General

Summary: Prohibit certain harvest of menhaden. An act to make it unlawful to take menhaden or Atlantic thread herring with a purse seine net deployed by a mother ship and one or more runner boats in coastal fishing waters.

Issue Brief: Knife Definitions
Summary: Proposed law excludes from the definition of illegal carrying of weapons the following knives: 1. Any knife that may be opened with one hand by manual pressure applied to the blade or any projection of the blade. 2. Any knife that may be opened by means of inertia produced by the hand, wrist, or other movement, provided the knife has either a detent or other structure that provides resistance that must be overcome in opening or initiating the opening movement of the blade or a bias or spring load toward the closed position. Effective August 1, 2012. (Amends R.S. 14:95(A)(4)).

Status:Passed House and Senate Chambers; sent to the Governor by the Secretary of the Senate on May 17.

California SB 1221 

Intro Date: 2/23/2012

Sponsor: Senator Ted Lieu

Issue Brief: Hunting with Hounds

Summary: This bill would prohibit a person from permitting a dog to pursue a bear or bobcat at any time. This bill would exempt from that prohibition the use of dogs by federal, state, or local law enforcement officers, or their agents or employees, when carrying out official duties as required by law. By changing the definition of a crime, this bill would impose a state-Mandated local program.

Status: Passed Senate (Ayes 22. Noes 15.) and read first time in Assembly; Held at desk on May 21.
