Bison Brief
Issue 1, March 2012

 Dear Fellow Alumni,

The Alumni Association is proud to announce the launch of our new online alumni newsletter, the Bison Brief, in honor of Southwestern's mascot, the Bison.  This newsletter is our way of staying in touch and keeping you informed about the Southwestern community.  In an effort to go green we are sending this newsletter via email and will also make it available online.

In each issue of the Bison Brief, you can read about your fellow alumni - with our Alumni Profiles and Classnotes Section; stay current with news and developments - in the Southwestern News and You Make a Difference sections; and learn about upcoming events - in the 100 Celebrations and On The Road sections.  If you have any news or events to share - please send us an email at alumni@swlaw.edu so they can be published in a future issue of the Bison Brief.

As you will read, there is a lot to celebrate, including our Centennial Anniversary and our talented trailblazing alums! Thank you for your continued participation and support of Southwestern. Enjoy and look out for the next issue of the Bison Brief

Sincerely,

Heidi M. Yoshioka '89

100yrs_horiz.logoLegal Community Honors Southwestern Alumni on the Bench

A sold-out crowd of more than 700 guests gathered to salute the distinguished graduates of Southwestern who have served on the bench and to hear Justice Sandra Day O'Connor's keynote address at the law school's Judges Tribute Dinner on February 24 at the Los Angeles Millennium Biltmore Hotel.  In her remarks, Justice O'Connor commented on the rich history of trailblazers in the justice system from Southwestern and promoted judicial independence and the need for a renewed emphasis on civics education.

During Southwestern's first century, the law school produced well over 450 distinguished judicial officers of superior courts, state supreme courts, administrative law and workers compensation courts, military courts, tribal courts, courts of appeal, and US bankruptcy and district courts.  In addition to hundreds of courtrooms throughout California, there are Southwestern judicial contingents in 18 states and two foreign countries. The event provided a wonderful opportunity to recognize their dedication and service and pay tribute to the nearly 100 alumni judges in attendance.

The Judges Tribute Dinner raised over $85,000, and the proceeds will support the newly established scholarship fund in memory of California Supreme Court Justices B. Rey Schauer '16, Paul Peek '30 and Stanley Mosk '35.
