Westshore Transportation Studies underway...As one Westshore area transportation study begins to conclude, another is set to begin.
- The Westshore Multimodal Study, a collaborative effort to determine a feasible location for a multimodal center in the Westshore business district is scheduled to conclude later this year or early 2012. The study is a combined effort of the Florida Department of Transportation, Tampa Bay Area Regional Transportation Authority, Hillsborough County Metropolitan Planning Agency and the City of Tampa. The Westshore Alliance serves on the study's Executive Management Team. The study team has narrowed the list of potential site locations from over 20 locations, to four potential sites (get the map here). The team is now in the process of further screening the potential sites and plans to conclude with recommendations on one or several potential locations in addition to recommendations on site connectivity and a list of prioritized transportation network improvements.
- A new study, to evaluate the feasibility of a Westshore area circulator bus will begin later this year. The Hillsborough Metropolitan Planning Agency will soon issue a scope of services and begin to evaluate the potential ridership, estimated capital and operating costs, routes, etc., of a circulator bus for the business district. A Westshore circulator has long been discussed as an approach to alleviate traffic congestion by providing employees and visitors an alternative to using a vehicle to get to various locations in the business district. The circulator would also serve as a critical component of a transit hub in Westshore. The study is expected to begin in October and conclude in mid to late 2012.

Florida Orthopaedic Institute has leased a former Borders bookstore location at 909 N. North Dale Mabry Highway, with plans to convert it into a clinic that is scheduled to open in January, 2012. The 27,500 sf facility will include x-ray, MRI, clinical offices and facilities for physical and occupational therapy.
In a recent study of 40 office markets across North America, Jones Lang LaSalle revealed the most expensive streets* for office space and Boy Scout Blvd. ranked 29th on the list. (See the full list here). As further testament to the desirability of the location, two developers have filed rezoning petitions with the City of Tampa for sites along Boy Scout Blvd. Both are scheduled to be heard on November 10:
- MCRT Investments has proposed a plan for a 300 unit apartment complex on a 3.3 acre site on Boy Scout/Spruce Street, between Trask and Hesperides.
- Saber Real Estate Advisors has proposed a plan for 40,000 square feet of retail space at the southwest corner of Boy Scout Blvd and West Shore Blvd. Plans call for three buildings on the site: a 24,500-square-foot building for The Container Store, and buildings potentially for a bank and another store.
The City of Tampa's Land Development department produces a monthly newsletter that lists upcoming public hearings for rezonings, wet-zonings, variance requests and more. You can access the latest newsletter here. |
