Academy of Scholastic Achievement
Fall 2011

Thank You William G. McGowan Fund!

Ms. Knight Leads ASA Reads workshop

ASA Literacy Coordinator, Elissa Knight, leads a teacher workshop
on the Five Pillars of Reading and how to administer the Basic Reading Inventory (BRI). The August workshop helped kick off ASA Reads, the school's literacy initative, which aims to help improve reading skills for the school's struggling readers.

ASA would like to thank the William G. McGowan Charitable Fund for awarding the school a $25,000 grant in support of ASA Reads, the school's literacy initiative. The program targets struggling readers and helps them improve their reading skills through targeted, innovative instruction. Funding assistance from McGowan will help the Academy assemble a library, use reliable test diagnostics to accurately assess students' reading skills, and provide research-based instruction to students to help boost their fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension skills. The school hopes to increase participant reading skills by two grade levels by the end of the school year. This summer's ASA Alumni Event was a big hit. The July 20th event drew more than 50 attendees. The ASA graduates toured the school, made video testimonials, played ASA history and trivia games, and a lucky few walked away with raffle prizes. Alumni also donated generously toward the new ASA Reading Library. The school hopes to host an alumni event annually.

Thanks DFSS For Supporting Our Garden
Two ASA students made a big impact on the environment and the community this summer, thanks to the Chicago Department of Family and Support Services (DFSS). The agency awarded ASA a 2011 summer mini-grant, enabling the Academy to hire two students to work in the school's community garden for six weeks. Under the direction of ASA Teacher and Custodian, Antonino Lupo and Andre Gardner, the students, Aaron Linton and Sedria Smith, cleaned the garden and watered and harvested the plants and herbs. They also provided two workshops on healthy eating and positive nutrition to elementary students in Austin. ASA would like to thank Ruth Kimble of the Austin Childcare Providers Network and Principal Jacqueline Faye Hearns of Helen M. Hefferan Elementary School for allowing our students to present at their locations. This is the second year ASA was awarded a DFSS Summer Mini-Grant.

ASA 30-laptop mobile cart

At ASA, increased access to technology is more than an idea, it's a reality. With the purchase of a mobile laptop cart in August, this year, students have access to more computers than ever before. The new cart holds 30 laptops and can be moved from room to room, enabling teachers to transform their traditional classes to wireless classes with ease. This is ASA's second wireless computer cart. The first, which holds 25 laptops, was purchased in 2007. Including the 30 computers in the first-floor computer lab, ASA students now have  access to more than 80 computers school-wide.
