PamSpotlight on a JW House Volunteer:

Meet Pam

JW House celebrated our amazing volunteers on Sunday April 22 with a brunch in our backyard in honor of National Volunteer Appreciation Week. In 2011, JW House volunteers donated over 7,100 hours of their time to the house! Over 50 volunteers were in attendance of the event and special recognition was given to Pam Phelps as Volunteer of the Year. In 2011, Pam volunteered over 253 hours to JW House! Guests of JW House are very appreciative of the warmth and hospitality of Pam. Pam also is a wonderful baker and you can always count on delicious smells coming from the kitchen when Pam volunteers on Tuesday afternoon.

"For me, after much searching, I was fortunate enough to be accepted as a volunteer at JW House.  It is a lovely facility which opens its doors to local people and families who have other family members and loved ones in nearby hospitals.  The loving part of this house is that it opens its doors to those families who need a day or a night's place of respite and renewal; a place where they can feel like they're in a "home away from home" for a meal, a compassionate ear, hug, or a place to lay their weary heads for a day or more.
I was drawn to it immediately.   It's not that I feel I'm making a significant difference in their difficult time.  I just feel that I might help to be a little buffer for them during this time and to help out where and when I can at "the House" in any way that's needed. In the end, not to be corny, but it is becoming the 'bridge over troubled waters' for me and has lifted me to a new spiritual place. It has helped take my head and thinking from 'me' to 'them.  It is so rewarding to wake up wanting just to 'give.' There is never a day when I don't feel better, renewed, and fuller when I leave than when I have arrived to volunteer.  There is truly something unique and uplifting about being able to step out of yourself and your comfort zone and become part of something greater than ourselves. We must never take that for granted. And, the need in so many areas is so great."
